You might call it a carport. Someone else might call it an overhang. In the region of the country that includes the bayou, French and Cajun influence, and Victorian/classical/arts and crafts style architecture, it might be called a "porte-cochere".

From the wiki: A porte-cochere (French porte-cochere, literally "coach gate", also called a carriage porch) is the architectural term for a porch or portico-like structure at a main or secondary entrance to a building, through which it is possible for a horse and carriage or motor vehicle to pass, in order for the occupants to alight under cover, protected from the weather.

Porte-cocheres come in a multiple of styles and have been used in nearly every architectural style in American cities. They can be simple or ornate, insulated or constructed of a single skin. Usually open on 3 sides and with a column design, they are attached to homes to provide additional porch space, covered parking, or storage.

For lots that do not include enough space for an enclosed garage, a carport is an excellent way to provide covered protection for your vehicle and yourself as you get in and out of the car on rainy days.

A side attachment to the house can be placed on any side, making the porte-cocheres design versatile enough to become a covered back porch or parties, front porch for relaxation, or side porch for vehicle storage. How you customize the details will make the difference!

Homes that have a circular drive can incorporate well-designed porte-cocheres to the front of their home, making it easier for guests to pull in, protected from the elements or parking on the street.

The hobbyist who is tinkering on a car or the active family needing a place to store their bikes or golf cart may find a single-skin carport an affordable and easy way to achieve protected space.
