AED Defibrillator Might Have Saved Life of Palm Beach Florida Billionaire

Palm Beach Florida - It has been reported that billionaire Jeffry Picower died from a heart attack on October 25, 2009 while swimming in the pool of his $28 million Palm Beach mansion. This story caught my attention not because of the alleged Madoff connection but because the story did not mention his family or staff performing CPR or using an Automated External Defibrillator - AED on Mr. Picower.

In June of 2009 Michael Jackson died from Sudden Cardiac Arrest. In 2008 Tim Russert of NBC´s Meet The Press also died from a Heart Attack (Sudden Cardiac Arrest). In all of these cases, financially secure people died from heart attacks, and were not defibrillated in a timely manner. According to the American Heart Association, sudden cardiac arrest claims about 340,000 lives each year – or around 930 every day in the United States. Sudden cardiac arrest, which is the leading cause of death in the United States kills more people than breast cancer, lung cancer, and AIDS combined. Currently 95 percent of all cardiac arrest victims die.

The above three people were wealthy. Why did they not have an AED nearby? A simple, relatively inexpensive device may have saved their lives. An Automated External Defibrillator or AED is a portable, battery operated electronic device about the size of a laptop computer. The AED automatically diagnoses the potentially life threatening cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia in a victim and is able to treat the patient by an electrical shock which stops the arrhythmia, allowing the heart to re-establish an effective rhythm. AEDs are designed to be simple so that anyone can use one.

AEDs range in price from about $1,250 to about $1,800. While not affordable for everyone, for millionaires and billionaires living in wealthy Florida communities such as Palm Beach and Jupiter Island, an AED costs less than they might spend on a good bottle of wine at dinner. Mr. Picower, Mr. Jackson and Mr. Russert might still be alive today had these devices been immediately available. The small investment in safety is invaluable if it saves your life or the life of a friend or family member.

Wealthy families that live on Palm Beach, Jupiter Island and other wealthy Florida communities should have AEDs in their homes, on their yachts, and jets as well as in their offices. They should train everyone around them in CPR AED and First Aid. Train their families, their staff, the chef, the butler, the chauffeur, security staff, the pilot and the yacht captain and crew. I suggest training everyone around you.

I work with a lot of wealthy families, yacht owners, boat captains and pilots selecting the right AED for their needs. Last month I was in Fort Lauderdale delivering an AED to a wealth businessman. We trained the pilot, yacht captain and household staff. They were preparing for a big trip outside of the USA and wanted to be prepared for all medical emergencies. I often work with actors, sports figures, musicians and a wide variety of affluent clients that take their health and safety seriously.

The CPR School is a mobile CPR AED and First Aid company. We travel to the client and talk with them about their safety needs. We perform a site survey, and decide how many AEDs are necessary, which type of AED is best, and conduct CPR AED and First Aid training for the owner´s family and staff. We work with our clients every step of the way from A through Z and are always professional and discreet.
