This Isn’t Joe Biden’s Wal Mart

Ken Hughes
I need to start by saying I’m not a fan of WalMart, I refuse to shop in one of their stores, I can assure you I’m not missed. My antagonism with WalMart has nothing to do with how they treat their employees. It’s personal and shall remain so.

Several Democratic presidential hopefuls have chosen to take on WalMart’s employment practices. I’m sure they haven’t thought this thing through thoroughly or they would have gotten some easily obtainable fact before jumping into waters over their heads.

World wide WalMart employee’s 1.3 million people. In the United States they employee 275,000 African Americans, 150,000 Hispanics, 240,000 Senior Citizens over 55 years of age. The average wage is $ 10.55 per hour. Most full and part time employees are eligible to health care at an average of $ 11.00 a month. WalMart is the largest health care provider in the nation.

If I were Mr. Biden and his ilk I’d think twice before I decided to upset over a million citizens. Most WalMart employees are extremely loyal to the company. WalMart defines this country every bit as much as the Flag and NASCAR. The average WalMart employee is well aware how they’ve been able to grow into the largest retailer in the world. Sam Walton knew he had to do three things, a] sell at less than his competitors, b] control the cost of merchandise, c] control labor and befit costs. All these things were done without drying up his venders and employees ability to survive. This philosophy has been passed down to the lowest levels of the WalMart chain.

If WalMart is guilty of anything its not starving their employees it’s boarding up Main Street America. If Mr. Biden wanted to challenge WalMart it should have been in the 1960’s when Sam Walton was destroying Small Town America.

In the last three years WalMart has created 240,000 new jobs theoretically that’s 120 thousand mom and pop stores going out of business. I submit to Mr. Biden and the others we can’t go back to the 50’s when Unions were king. More than anything it was Union demands that drove businesses out of the country. Yet America has prospered and grown beyond the expectations of many.

Democratic legislators believe we should consider and discuss new proposals but not at the expense of getting rid of any of the old. There isn’t a policy or a program since the New Deal they would consider getting rid of. It was just this year the tax on telephones enacted to fund the Spanish American war was repealed. There’s still a department called the REA electrifying rural America that was completed shortly after World War Two. Now they finance Golf Courses at government expense.

Joe Biden and friends don’t believe for one moment WalMart is fleecing its employees. He found a crowd willing to listen if he spoke on their agenda. That’s the problem with presidential wann-a-be’s they’ll say anything to keep the crowds interest then say they were quoted out of context later. There’s no liar like a man running for a potential political office.

This is not to say all politicians are lairs, when two or more men get to gather it becomes necessary to modify one’s opinions if you expect to keep the group together, that’s politics.
