CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA - The village of Clanwilliam, nestled at the foot of the Cederberg Mountains in South Africa, recently won the coveted Kaap Rapport and Van Loveren 'Town of the Year 2009' award.

With the Cederberg the new destination on everyone's lips, this is welcome news for Clanwilliam, one of the ten oldest towns in South Africa.

Clanwilliam is only two hours' drive from Cape Town - itself one of the premier tourism hotspots in the world. The town, which was initially known as Jan Disselsvalleij, was permanently settled from 1725 onwards. In 1814 its name was changed to Clanwilliam by Sir John Cradock, who named the town after his father-in-law, the Earl of Clanwilliam.

With the Cederberg's unique, rugged beauty and adventure experiences drawing a growing number of visitors to the area, the picturesque Settler town of Clanwilliam is well positioned to take advantage of this influx.

A visit to the Cederberg has much to offer, from opportunities to view Bushman rock art, walk or hike in the Cederberg mountains, enjoy horseriding, explore the famous flower routes, or to simply immerse oneself in the beautiful landscape.

Bakkrans Nature Reserve in the Cederberg Mountains is a remote and little known wilderness area with magnificent mountains and many plant species, indigenous game, birds and other wildlife.

Bakkrans also contributes to understanding early human history by preserving and making available for viewing rock paintings that are thousands of years old.

Another example of what the Cederberg Mountains have to offer is Mount Ceder Lodge, which is situated in the Cederberg Conservancy Wilderness Area, in a valley surrounded by the Cederberg and Koue Bokkeveld Mountains.

Mount Ceder Lodge is located south of Clanwilliam on Grootrivier Farm. It is a working farm both sides of the Groot River. The river offers swimming, canoeing and fishing opportunities, and biking and hiking bridal trails are available as well as 4x4 trails.
