UC Davis named in federal complaint for criminal treatment of animals
A protest will be held today at the UCD Quad (1 Shields Ave.), sponsored by SAEN, an Ohio-based animal research watchdog group.
SAEN said UC Davis is responsible for the deaths of at least 14 monkeys over an 11-month period from June of 2008 to April of this year, and that the deaths violated federal law. The primate center at UC Davis has been cited several times after monkeys were killed in preventable lab mishaps.
Thursday's actions are part of demonstrations in more than two dozen cities this week opposing the use of non-human primates in laboratory experiments. Opponents are supported by reports that violence in labs to non-human privates is invalidating research.
In-depth investigations of laboratories across the U.S. by SAEN
(www.saenonline.org) show violence toward non-human primates in laboratories is rampant, with hundreds of monkeys & apes suffering from traumatic injuries.
"We are literally throwing money into a black hole. The highly stressed and diseased condition of the primates potentially invalidates more than $1 billion in federally-funded research," charges national organizer of National Primate Liberation Week (NPLW) Michael A. Budkie, A.H.T., SAEN executive director.
Citing health care records from major primate labs across the nation collected from government reports, Budkie lists case after case of severe trauma resulting in multiple amputations of digits and tails as well as monkeys which appear to be nothing more than walking skeletons, having no body fat whatsoever.
SAEN said there are at least 120,000 primates used in or being bred for research in the U.S., including thousands at UCD.
