Record Book Bucks, Missouri Kansas Illinois Ohio. Find the Best Trophy Deer Hunting on Private Land
Have you been longing to harvest a record book buck? Many areas hold good bucks; however, there are some areas that are more susceptible to growing big record book bucks.
So what land feature stands out for growing big bucks? The answer may surprise even the most savvy hunter "The relationship between record- book entries and river systems is evident throughout the country, especially the Mississippi, Ohio and Missouri River drainages," says in a report by Dr. Joel Helmer compiled for the Quality Deer Management Association. Helmer compiled the top 10 list of record book bucks including; the recent explosion of entries as found in a study conducted from 1996 2005.
Without further ado, here are the top areas for record book bucks.
10. East Coast Suburbia Counties in the New York City area, as well as, Washington D.C. and Philadelphia has turned in a lot of record book bucks and many of these deer are being harvested in small pockets with little hunting pressure.
9. South Texas Does it surprise any deer enthusiast that South Texas made this list? The Brush Country from San Antonio to the King Ranch is the key areas to focus on if a Texas record book buck strikes your fancy.
8. Southern Indiana - Though Helmer suggests Indiana is over looked as a trophy deer state, I see some giants coming for this state. Take a look at the buck that Michael Waddell of Realtree´s Road Trips took while hunting on NASCAR´s Tony Stewart´s farm last season. The smaller river systems are good starting points to find your Hoosier buck.
7. Eastern Kansas - An early black powder season and a rifle season timed after the rut, opens endless possibilities for hunters looking for a Sunflower state record book buck.
6. Northern Missouri According to Lonnie Hansen, resource scientist for the Missouri Department of Conservation "There is no advantage of Northwest Missouri over Northeast Missouri. Anywhere above the Missouri River should produce big record book bucks. Don´t over look the central region of Missouri." says Hansen.
5. Southern Ohio Ohio has laid claim to many huge record book bucks and has more than 1,600 entries in the book during the 10 year study period. This places it well on the top 10 list. Most of the entries are from the southern part of the Buckeye state.
4. Western Kentucky A relative newcomer to record book bucks, The Bluegrass state has made a strong charge on the record book, making Kentucky a great overlooked big buck state.
3. Eastern or Southern Iowa Does this surprise anyone that Iowa made the top ten list? The Hawkeye state accounts for 43 percent of the entries in the record books during the study period.
2. Illinois The famed "Golden Triangle" in the western part of Illinois gets all the fanfare, but record book bucks can come from anywhere in the Prairie state.
1. Wisconsin The numbers don´t lie and more than half of the Badger state counties have produced at least one record book buck. The number one county is Buffalo County.
