Fighting Terrorism, But At What Cost?
Sometimes when too much caution is exercised though, one might observe a sense of paranoia coming on. Take the recently thwarted terrorist plot. It is now known that such persons thought of using liquid products to create a potential disturbance on board certain aircrafts. As this has managed to cause air travel to become more strict, has something else occurred as well? Will it change the way some airport retailers go about their daily business or will the economy take somewhat of a dive for such persons?
Many duty free shpos that successfully sold such things as perfume or even alcohol in the recent past to their travelling customers may now start to see a dramatic decline in sales.
For example, a tourist goes to a tropical island paradise for a vacation. On his way to the aircraft he/she stops at the local airport duty free shop for a souvenir type amount of liquor to take back to his/her home country. Not anymore.
With the recent ban on a wide array of liquid products travellers can no longer carry on board, this can no longer be done. That kind of thing used to occur in an era not too long ago; the pre terrorist era.
Terrorist plots may come and go as the potential culprits are caught and handled, but at what cost? It seems to this writer, with every new restriction that pertains to air travel some one will suffer.
Be it the airline industry or the owners of those duty free shops in airports around the western, industrialized world.
This war on terror is taking a deeper toll than anyone ever imagined it would. It used to be that all law enforcement officers had to do was catch such groups. Sounds rather simple, doesn’t it? Now the problem is much larger.
It is larger because people’s livelihoods are being affected. The owners of those duty free shops will now have to think of a different way to make a living. All in the name of fighting terrorism.
