MAYOR NEWSOM CONGRATULATES THE FIRST GRADUATES OF THE CITY´S GREEN JOBS TRAINING PROGRAM
building off the success of the CityBuild Pre-Apprentice Academy.
"Programs like CityBuild, our new Green Skills Academy, and the Jobs NOW program, which uses federal stimulus funding to subsidize employment opportunities, are critical to provide residents the necessary skills and training to effectively compete in the new green economy," said Mayor Gavin Newsom. "Times are tough, so we need to get creative about how we find people jobs. Together, with this series of programs, we are putting people back to work."
The Environmental Field Technician training program prepares students for work in the growing environmental remediation field. Students learn how to sample, analyze and monitor groundwater, storm water, surface water, sediments, air and dust, soil stockpile and grab, and common remediation systems.
"Thanks to the City´s partnership with Brownfield Partners and its remediation contractor, MACTEC, the City now has a comprehensive curriculum of both classroom and hands-on field work to prepare residents for work on major remediation and environmental clean up projects," said Rhonda Simmons, OEWD´s Workforce Director.
"Today, eight residents from the City´s southeast sector fulfilled the rigorous 14-week CityBuild training academy and completed an additional two weeks of specialized environmental skills training preparing them to work as Environmental Field Technicians" added Ms. Simmons.
To connect graduates of the Environmental Field Technician training program with employers, OEWD hosted a resource fair with 11 major environmental employers (MACTEC, Universal Paragon Corporation, Brownfield Partners, Tetra Tech, Shaw Environmental, WDC Exploration & Wells, Envirosurvey, Aerotek, Inc., Boart Longyear Environmental and Infrastructure Division, Confluence Environmental, Inc. and Pagnini´s Incorporated).
San Francisco´s Green Skills Academy was recently awarded $1.37 million from the California Energy Commission and the California Public Utilities Commission for the Green Building and Clean Energy Pre- Apprenticeship Training Partnership and the Alternative and Renewable Fuel and Vehicle Technologies Workforce Development and Training Program (a Bay Area collaboration of 4 counties and community colleges).
Over the next several months, OEWD will begin to offer training and placement services for careers in environmental field work, solar installation, energy efficiency, weatherization, green construction, and alternative and renewable fuel and vehicle training through partnerships with City College, construction trade unions, community based organizations and local employers.
