When to go - or not to go? That is the question. Forget for a moment that William Shakespeare is probably rolling over in his grave and let me try to help you figure this question out. Unfortunately the answer to the best time to fish BC oceans for King Salmon or Halibut is not as straight forward as one might hope. Let me explain.

Most northern lodges on the coast of BC open in mid May and close anywhere from the end of August to the first or second week of September (approximately 120 days). These are commercial operations who share the same objective- to meet and exceed the clients expectations so they come back to visit year after year. The key word here is "expectations". Expectations when it comes to fishing are as diverse as the number of anglers that fish. To some the very experience of being in a remote location "away from it all" is enough to satisfy. For others, unless they are catching King Salmon after King Salmon and pulling up halibut on demand they would not consider their experience a success.

Let me share an example with you that I had the opportunity to witness first hand. One of my former travel consultants (who shall remain nameless) received a call from a gentleman who´s dream was to catch a "Tyee" King salmon (a King salmon weighing over 30lbs). Rather than just advising the client on the best time and location to do this ( and of course providing a cautionary note that there is a reason it is called fishing and not catching) the consultant proceeded to talk about the opportunity to catch a 60 or even a 70lb King salmon. By the time the trip arrived the guest was so focused on the 60 or 70lb Kings that the fact that he ended up catching a 36, 42 and 46 pound King became irrelevant. He was totally unhappy with his experience and never returned to one of our Resorts. Needless to say the consultant´s career was short lived and this saga remains a testament to how an experience of a lifetime can be made irrelevant because unrealistic expectations.

So when we answer the question as to the best time to fish BC oceans for King salmon or halibut we must be fully aware of what your expectations are. Is it all about frequency, action and size? Are you looking for more halibut fishing opportunities than King salmon or vice versa? What are your expectations regarding weather? Are you more inclined to enjoy yourself in warmer weather (which sometimes can affect fishing adversely) or are you willing to dress for success (raingear rubber boots etc). All times, May through September will offer you fantastic opportunities to fish for King salmon or halibut in BC oceans. The point of this article is to encourage you to be clear with your trusted outdoor adviser as to exactly what you are looking for.
