Custom Garage Doors: Opting the Right One for You

Andrew Stratton
Your home is a reflection of who you are. The color, style, and design type says a lot about the person who resides there. The garage door is a large visual and functional component of your home. You take so much care with your home's appearance. Why stop short of the garage door?

There are many types of garage doors available today, either ready-made or custom designed. Garage doors come in the finest woods, steel, aluminum and fiberglass. They come with various hoisting mechanisms including up and over types, roller types, swing hung types and sectional types. Some have intricate visual details of molding, carving, panels and windows.

Custom garage doors may include specialized ornamental hardware in various metals which will add a unique touch. There are as many styles of custom ordered garage doors as there are architectural styles of homes. Just a few examples are Mediterranean, Spanish, contemporary and the classic east coast style. Mediterranean style is reminiscent of rustic regions in France and Italy.

Rich colored carved woods, often adorned with windows, will align perfectly with a Mediterranean style home. Spanish designed doors are simple and often come in natural woods to compliment a house designed with Spanish motif in mind. Contemporary designs will set off that architecturally modern abode. The east coast styles are perfect for those old Americana classics such as the Cape Cod, saltbox, craftsman or Tudor home.

Functionally, options for your garage door include the type of opener that will optimally hoist your type of door. There are three kinds of openers available to do this hoisting work: the Reinforced Rubber Belt, the Screw Drive System and the Chain Loop.

The Reinforced Rubber Belt type is the most luxurious but also the most costly. One popular aspect of it is that it's very quiet. It uses a reinforced rubber belt which moves the trolley in order to move the door.

The slowest type is the Screw Drive System. A long screw is attached to the rail in order to move the trolley. It is somewhat louder than the reinforced rubber belt system, but it is the strongest method by far. This may be the one for your home if you attempting to hoist a heavy one panel garage door.

The Chain Loop type would be a good selection for the budget minded. Its downside is that it is the loudest. A chain is attached to a rail in order to manipulate the trolley's hoisting motion. Take a careful look at all the options, and then select the perfect custom garage door to complement both your home and your lifestyle.
