San Francisco, CA — The Newsom for California campaign announced today that Congressman Bob Filner (San Diego), Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Veterans´ Affairs, has endorsed Mayor Gavin Newsom for governor.

Rep. Filner was first elected to Congress in 1992 and has led successful initiatives to increase collaboration and investment in the relationship between the US and Mexico as "California's Border Congressman." Filner continues to advocate passionately for veterans, focusing on mental health care, educational benefits, and business opportunities.

"Gavin shares my dedication to working to protect those most in need, including veterans and the homeless," said Filner. "He is an innovative problem-solver with a record of reform and accomplishment. We need that kind of governor in Sacramento if we're going to move California in a new direction."

"I am proud and honored to have Bob Filner's support," Mayor Newsom said. "He is tireless in his efforts to help improve the lives of those who have served their country. We truly share a passion to end homelessness, and Bob's work to provide opportunity for all Californians is inspiring."

Rep. Filner's endorsement follows those of former President Clinton and former State Senator Sheila Kuehl. Campaign Chair State Senator Alex Padilla made California history as the first Latino President of the League of California Cities and the first Latino and youngest-ever Los Angeles City Council President.
