SAN FRANCISCO, CA - Today, Mayor Gavin Newsom announced that Nektar Therapeutics has selected Mission Bay to establish a state-of-the-art R&D center and corporate headquarters.

"This is an extraordinary milestone for Mission Bay. With this move, Nektar will bring 150 biotech jobs to San Francisco and further establish Mission Bay as the premier biotech cluster in the nation, and arguably the world," said Mayor Newsom. "Nektar´s decision to relocate to San Francisco is proof that even in these challenging economic times, San Francisco continues to attract companies that are leaders in the biotech industry. I am proud to welcome Nektar Therapeutics to San Francisco."

Nektar has entered into a sublease with Pfizer to occupy a 102,000 square foot R&D and Office building located at 455 Mission Bay Boulevard in San Francisco. The new facility will be adjacent to the UCSF Life Sciences and Medical Center Campus at Mission Bay and is scheduled to be completed in the second half of 2010. Nektar plans to relocate all functions currently located in San Carlos, California, including its corporate headquarters, to the new Mission Bay facility.

"We are delighted that Nektar will be located at the center of one of the nation´s premier and growing biotech hubs," said Howard W. Robin, President and Chief Executive Officer of Nektar. "This new location at Mission Bay provides Nektar´s R&D team with a state-of-the-art facility for continued scientific innovation, and supports our successful strategy to focus on developing novel therapies with our advanced polymer conjugate technology. We thank Mayor Newsom for collaborating with us on this move and being highly supportive of bringing new biotech companies to the City of San Francisco."

Upon learning about Pfizer´s decision to not move forward with their Mission Bay location, the Mayor´s Office worked closely with key Mission Bay stakeholders to attract a new biotech tenant to the space.

"The City assisted efforts to re-tenant the building," said Michael Cohen, Director of the San Francisco Office of Economic and Workforce Development. "The swiftness with which this space was re-leased – 3 months – speaks to the resiliency of the San Francisco economy and the strength of Mission Bay and San Francisco as a compelling place to do business."

Nektar´s R&D center at Mission Bay will house biology, chemistry, pharmacology and clinical development capabilities to complement Nektar´s existing research capabilities in Huntsville, Alabama, and additional R&D support operations in Hyderabad, India.
