Lukewarm Watermelon Anyone?

Robert Paul Reyes
Iraq is spiraling out of control into an orgy of sectarian violence. Iran's nuclear weapons program is threatening regional stability and world peace. North Korea is lobbing missiles like there's no tomorrow. Israel is once again at war with one of her neighbors. You need to take out a mortgage to fill up your tank.

Those of us who can't afford a psychiatrist, take refuge in simple pleasures. We read a book, bask in the sun, take a walk with our dog, or on a hot summer day we bite into an ice-cold slice of delicious watermelon.

A picnic on a hot August day, watching young ladies in tank tops and shorts playing volleyball, while I'm devouring watermelon with juice dripping down my chin -- my vision of paradise.

But spoilsport scientists are now saying that watermelon is most nutritious when stored and served at room temperature.

Room temperature watermelon? Why not serve melted ice cream, or popcorn topped with frozen butter?

Forbes.com reports:

"Reporting in the Aug. 9 issue of the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry, the researchers based their premise on a tally that compared the levels of key antioxidants in whole watermelons that were either refrigerated or stored at room temperature for two weeks."

In this world gone crazy preserving our mental sanity is even more important than our physical health, and nothing promotes good mental health like enjoying a chilled slice of watermelon.

I don't care what those egghead scientists think, I'm going to continue to enjoy my watermelon ice-cold.
