Surfing The Web With Apple iPhone – Pros and Cons
Browsing speed
Browsing with the iPhone and even iPhone 3G was quite slow, but the 3GS eliminates those problems with its improved hardware and networking features. This is mainly because Safari now uses a newer version of Webkit, which is generally faster. The faster browsing experience with the Apple iPhone 3GS can also attributed to the fact that AT&T has laid out their 7.2HSPA, providing speeds up to 7.2 Mbps.
The Sunspider benchmark, which tests the performance of a browser on JavaScript enabled websites shows that the Apple iPhone 3GS´s browser is almost twice as fast in rendering web pages when compared to the iPhone 3G. It also trounces the T-Mobile G1 and the Palm Pre. This gives us a very good indication about the capabilities of the browser.
User Interface
Along with browsing speeds, browsing experience is another area where the Apple iPhone 3GS proves to be a winner. The most interesting feature is tabbed browsing, which is also offered by the Opera Mobile browser. Whereas, Opera allows only 3 tabs to be open at a time, the iPhone Safari allows up to 8 tabs to be opened at the same time. This is extremely useful, when you want to open links from a website.
Zooming in and out of web pages by just pinching the screen is very easy. The browser also supports AJAX websites. You can save pages and images from the websites, so that you can read them later when you are offline or travelling, which is not uncommon but a handy feature nonetheless. The accelerometer in the Apple iPhone 3GS allows you to smoothly switch between horizontal and landscape views.
Not all rosy
However, the iPhone browser is not without its flaws. The main complaint against the Safari browser is that, like its predecessors, it does not support Flash content. It is difficult to fathom, why apple didn´t bother to include it in Apple iPhone 3GS, since it is a Flash is such an integral part of people´s browsing experience. It really is the only big disappoint in what is otherwise an excellent browser.
Also typing text on the touch screen keypad is a bit difficult and this hasn´t changed when compared to the previous two generations. Other complaints are something that you cannot avoid when using a smart phone when compared to a computer. Websites designed for large screens still don´t translate well into the small screens, but that is something that we can ignore for the Apple iPhone 3GS.
Overall, surfing the web using the Apple iPhone 3GS is a pleasure it probably gives you the best browsing experience of all smart phones. However, the lack of support for Flash sticks out like a sore thumb, and may well be a deal breaker for many.
