Green Tea Dieting- The 5 Must-Have´s

Julian Tai
If you´ve tried and failed on fad diet after fad diet, you may be leery of anything labelled "green tea dieting." Is it just another trend that will eventually lead back to weight gain and disappointment? Or, is it a fantastic way to help your lose weight and keep it off for good?

That depends. Green tea dieting needs to incorporate several factors to make sure that weight loss will be achieved.

When you review any diet that uses green tea, make sure it meets the following characteristics:

Step 1:

Make sure that the diet includes food, all food groups and enough of it. Sounds simple, right? However, this is the usual trickery of the smoke and mirrors of a fad diet. If the green tea diet promotes drinking green tea all day and tells you not to eat carbohydrates or likewise, only advises a meagre amount of food, then the diet is trying to make you believe that the green tea is helping you lose weight.

In fact, the diet will help you lose weight, but not because of the green tea but because it is a VLCD or very low calorie diet. Losing weight rapidly with a VLCD will lower your metabolism and as soon as normal eating resumes (and it will, it has to!), you will gain back the weight and possibly more. Stay away from this type of green tea dieting.

EgCG, the most important catechin in green tea, has been found to increase metabolism.

Step 2:

Make sure that the diet advocates exercise. Like it or not, you cannot lose weight properly without adequate exercise. By combining proper diet with adequate exercise, you can lose weight and keep it off for good. It only takes three weeks to make something a habit. Exercise for three weeks while eating a healthy diet and drinking green tea and you will reap the lasting rewards!

Caffeine and EgCG in green tea can help boost your work out as well! Studies have shown that the use of caffeine and EgCG not only improve endurance but also prolong the fat burning effects of exercise.

Step 3:

Make sure that the diet explains exactly what green tea is. You don´t have to know the history of tea (though interesting), but you do need to understand what makes tea… well, tea! Powdered instant teas and herbal varieties that only contain herbals and no real tea won´t be as beneficial to you as actual green tea.

Step 4:

Make sure that the diet advocates a "grazing" method of eating. In other words, there should be no skipping of meals and in fact, you should turn your three major meals into 6 smaller sizes to be eaten throughout the day. This, along with the green tea, will optimize your metabolism and help you lose weight.

Step 5:

Above all, make sure that the diet incorporates healthful choices. Everyone who wants to lose weight needs to eat plenty of veggies, fruits, whole grains and lean proteins. A good green tea diet will show you how to incorporate these healthful items, properly portioned in a no muss no fuss manner that you can utilize with your busy lifestyle.

Green tea will enhance your diet as well in terms of the amount and effectiveness of the antioxidants in green tea. EgCG is a super antioxidant and like all antioxidants has the capability of improving cardiovascular health, reducing and eliminating cancer causing free radicals, slowing the aging process and reducing inflammation in inflammatory disease.

All of the above are markers of a great weight loss plan, but with the added benefit of green tea, you´ll be that much more of a star on the road to weight loss!
