In A Word : Wishy-Washy: With 100 days to elections, the Democrats must do much, or lose.
All of president Bush's activity geared toward the upcoming mid-term elections in the next 100 days appear to be unnecessary in light of the Democratic strategy that has appeared in the last several months. What? You haven't heard of it? I'm not surprised for there isn't any. As usual, the donkeys are too busy whining and engaging in damaging infighting rather than directing all their energies toward electing their candidates.
There's no wonder the Democrats have surrendered their power to the opposition considering how they have acted since 1994 when they lost control of the congress, to the present day when it appears they have lost everything else including the ability to think. The only activity they seem not to have lost is that of being the victim. Every time the administration has enacted a law or changed a rule that goes contrary to the good and welfare of the people, the Dems have reacted with disapproval and vocal opposition, but rarely have they offered a better choice.
The cry, there must be a better way, falls on deaf Republican ears and, like the story of the boy who cried wolf too often, is ignored by the general populace who believe a better way is available but can't rely on the Democratic party to offer such an alternative. The fact is, the political party of the donkey has learned, not to stubbornly plod forward toward a goal as it once did, but retreat from the verbal invectives offered them by the currently over-bloated Elephants who run the White House, both houses of congress and the Supreme Court.
Is it too late for the Democratic party? No, but they'll never regain their stature until they regain their courage to stand up and fight that other party. If they are to become anything near what they were, they will have to offer viable alternatives and workable solutions to the ills of the nation and the concerns of the world. That's a tall order. It will take a lot of work to change the image of democracy projected by our current administration which defines it as a system of government where you can always say what you want as long as you do what your told.
It is time for the Democrats to spend less time in the library studying theory and more time on public transportation listening to the people and fighting for the things they need. When the Republicans and Conservatives clamor for rapid progress, they must be reminded that the only progress which can be rapid is that which travels downhill. The democratic party has gone that route and, from the looks of things, hit bottom, so there's only one direction it can go, and that's up.
It is unfortunate that the nation has had to endure a grievous blow to its pride (9/11), two wars (Afghanistan and Iraq), a huge deficit (more than a trillion additional dollars), a conservative rearrangement of the Supreme Court (Roberts and Alito) and numerous freedoms lost for people to begin to consider the Democrats as possibly being the better choice. Now is not the time for the party to prove them wrong by retreating from the good fight. Now is the time to create a platform that makes sense for the nation and fight for it in the media and on the street corners. If fear causes a man or a party to act the whipping boy and tremble when faced with verbal invective, it does not inspire trust in that man. The highway of fear is the shortest route to defeat.
This is not to say that there aren't some Republicans and Conservatives who hold the welfare of the nation and its people above all other considerations, for there are, and they show willingness to work hand in glove with anyone to achieve lofty goals. Unfortunately, there are too few to make a real difference, just as there are too few Democrats to openly defy and defeat the current administration. More must be found and cultivated, like marigolds in a vegetable garden that drive out the pests that would ruin the vegetables.
When someone does a poor job, they must either be retrained or let go. Our current administration is doing a poor job and the nation cannot afford to engage in on-the-job training so the alternative is to fire them and give those other people a chance to set right the upset cart. This is no time for wishy-washy thought. Think decisively and make the change before the opportunity passes and we once again live to regret our lack of purpose.
