"Two for Two" in Antioch
After months of tough negotiations with management, SEIU-UHW members at two Antioch-based convalescent hospitals have ratified new contracts. Workers at Lone Tree Convalescent Hospital approved their agreement unanimously (40 to 0) and nearby Antioch workers voted 39 to 1 to approve theirs.
"We have a great contract now, one that is a victory for us and for our patients," said Sue Wilson, who works at Lone Tree and serves on the bargaining team.
Josie Villalobos, a CNA and bargaining team member at Antioch, agreed: "We worked hard for this contract and I join my co-workers in saying that we are pleased to have this agreement. One-hundred percent dental for me and my family is great."
Both agreements include the following basic improvements:
Wage Improvements: $.60 across the board on all wages and scales, effective back to June 16, 2009 (Antioch) and July 1, 2009 (Lone Tree); $.60 across the board in 2010; and $.70 across the board in 2011.
Healthcare Coverage: Kaiser Trust Option 2 (or equivalent) for the term of the agreement for full-time employees (or $50 per pay period instead of benefits).
Dental Coverage: Delta Dental Division 291 PPO for all employees, dependents and spouses at no cost to employee. Plan includes orthodontic benefit and children may remain on plan until 24.
Contract Protections: If their employer sells the facility, the contract will require buyer to recognize the Union and the contract. If management wants to subcontract any work, the subcontractor will have to recognize the Union and continue the contract. Buyers or subcontractors will have 120 days to bargain any changes to the contract with SEIU-UHW.
The contracts include other improvements in leave and union protections that are specific to each bargaining unit.
