Making Something Out Of Something That Isn’t

Ken Hughes
George Bush declined invitations to speak before the NAACP for a reason -- Julian Bond the head of the NAACP for years made some rather disparaging remarks about President Bush along with some despicable ads during his 2000 presidential campaign. A new leadership of the NAACP and a new invitation to the president and this gracious man, President Bush accepted the invitation forgetting past abuses looking to mend a fence or two. That’s not sucking up it’s called having good character, being a standup guy.

Why some blacks believe they hold some special political power escapes us. Several Republican Presidents and Congresspersons have been elected this past half century without the support of blacks. President Bush won two elections without catering to the NAACP, now their support is immaterial he accepts the invitation to appear at their convention that says more for his character than some of theirs.

Internet pundits are abuzz trying to put a spin on the outcome of his attendance. Some say he showed up to gain support for the coming midterm elections, that doesn’t sound plausible. The Republicans got through two presidential and two midterm elections without catering to the NAACP. It seems the president not showing up was more of a loss to the NAACP than Republicans. When a group any group becomes so arrogant they see themselves as the center of the issue circumstances usually takes them down a few pegs. The NAACP had become that arrogant they saw themselves as a must in any political campaign consequently they became more or less irrelevant to the political party in power.

It’s important to understand the NAACP doesn’t represent the black community’s political opinions as a whole. Like all voters everywhere blacks are independent thinkers. They’re predominately liberal that’s because for years Democrats bought their votes with government hand_outs it became an addiction they’re still struggling to overcome. That was back when the Democrats were opposed to civil rights and supported the welfare state. The black community has grown beyond that, the political reality of who it was that made their rise to equality on the nations economic ladder hasn’t dawned on them yet, in time it will.

The major achievements such as emancipation from slavery, civil rights, voting rights, home ownership, participation in national politics have all come to the black community because of Republican leadership, those promises made by Democrats, equal education, war on drugs, family values are empty promises that have yet to be fulfilled.

There are some in the black community who will point out the plight of blacks after forty years of government support is largely due to blacks themselves for taking every handout but the ones that counts self motivation, self pride and the desire to succeed.

The majority of the black community has assimilated into American society. It’s the followers of Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpten and the NAACP who still aren’t a part of the system. The afore mentioned keep telling blacks how mistreated they are when in fact more money has been allocated by the government on behalf of blacks than any other group. Had the money been given directly every black in America would be a millionaire today.

It’s astounding, pathetic and unfair a few can create such a negative image of so many that unjustly defines them not as individuals but as a group. It worth noting all those who bemoan the loudest the plight of blacks are all in the top income brackets of extortionists.

To all of those in the black community who’ve elevated themselves up to the misery index enjoyed by the rest of us, congratulations America needs you and wants you.
