Death threats against journalist Branko Gerovski in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia FYROM

According to Makfax and other sources, FYROMacedonian journalist Branko Gerovski has received death threats directed at his children.

Branko Gerovski is Editor in Chief of the current affairs weekly "Sega" (Now) and leads a non-governmental organization called "Citizens for European Macedonia" (GEM; http://www.gem.org.mk/). The NGO is brings together several intellectuals who are critical of the present government of Nikola Gruevski. Their manifesto claims among else: "Our struggle is against the politicians who talk about Europeanisation and the fight against corruption, but in fact enforce "Bucefalisation" and corruption of media, judges, academics and rectors."

On the 17th of February 1995 Branko Gerovski had been physically attacked by policemen, while reporting on the violent ethnic clashes in FYROM and his jaw was broken. He had been hospitalized for two weeks. More recently he criticized police corruption and the projects of "Antiquization" of FYROM involving among else expenditures in large statue of Alexander the Great. The present threats against Gerovski included an SMS with details of his childrenīs whereabouts and their daily routine. Similar threats were made apparently against another member of the organization, currently not named but believed to be an academic who has also criticized the populist policies of the present government.


The Association of Macedonian Journalists (AMJ) organised a demonstration outside the building of the Public Prosecution Office in Skopje on Wednesday 2 September to show their support to their colleague Branko Gerovski.
