Pennsylvania DEP Sets Public Meeting to Discuss Hazardous Waste Site in Washington County

PITTSBURGH, PA -- The Department of Environmental Protection will hold a public meeting Sept. 2 to outline Cyprus Amax Minerals Co.'s plan to investigate and clean up a 155-acre former zinc smelting site near Route 18 near Burgettstown, Washington County.

The 7 p.m. meeting will be held at the Smith Township Municipal Building, 1848 Smith Township State Road, Slovan.

American Zinc and Chemical Co. conducted zinc smelting at the site from 1914 to 1945, and waste from the smelting operations remains at the site. The waste is contaminated with lead, arsenic, cadmium, zinc, copper, tin, antimony and other materials.

"We know that those who live and work near the site will have a lot of questions about the investigation and characterization process as well as how it will affect them on a daily basis," acting DEP Southwest Regional Director Ron Schwartz said. "DEP has asked representatives from Cyprus to attend this meeting to answer those questions and offer a clear picture of what to expect."

The consent order and agreement, into which DEP entered with Cyprus in June, requires Cyprus to assume the remedial investigation, cleanup and post-remediation care of the site, which is owned by Langeloth Metallurgical Co. LLC, Bologna Coal Co. and Peterson Industries Inc. DEP's Hazardous Sites Cleanup Act fund will contribute a portion of the cost for work done on the Bologna and Peterson properties.

The investigation work, which will include the development of a cleanup plan, is expected to begin by the end of the summer and to be completed by July 2010. The cleanup plan will also be specified in a consent order and agreement, and it is anticipated that implementation of the plan will be initiated in 2010.

Anyone with questions about the meeting may call Community Relations Coordinator Katy Gresh at (412) 442-4203 or use the Pennsylvania AT&T Relay Service at (800) 654-5984 (TDD).

As required under HSCA, the consent order and agreement will be open for review and public comment until Sept. 9. Written comments will be accepted until that time.

Anyone who cannot attend the meeting, but has a question about the investigation, should contact Terry Goodwald of DEP's Environmental Cleanup program at (412) 442-4000 or 400 Waterfront Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 15222. Written comments regarding the investigation plan should also be directed there.
