Dale King Didn’t Go Far Enough

Ken Hughes
Dale King didn’t go far enough explaining why the public is a great deal of the cause of high oil prices (The Ugly Truth About High Gas Prices - American Chronicle, July 18, 2006). Oil isn’t just gasoline it’s 60 % or more of our economy. It’s everything from your kids diaper to the dashboard on your SUV and more, much more. It’s true we do waste a lot of fuel that could be put to better use by adhering to some of the suggested conservative measure being suggested. Americans reacts to crises and were not there yet.

The SUV had gotten a bad wrap for being the gas guzzler they aren’t. SUV’s are as fuel efficient as your lawn mower or your wave runner. Ford GM and Daimler Chrysler all make cars that run on E-85 [85 % ethanol] E-85 is as expensive as gas and 25 % less efficient no one is willing to make the switch to reduce oil consumption. All automobile manufactures have been making hybrid for years and they don’t sell, that’s the publics fault they’re available.

Mr. King says our gas consumption has risen by 45% in the last half century that may be a conservative estimate. Our population has doubles form 150 million to 300 million the number of cars has increased four fold. The car that got 12 mpg 50 years ago now gets 30 mpg. Not be too harsh on the public we must consider the many more uses for oil than there was half century ago the automobiles is only part of the story.

Again gasoline is only part of the story of oil. Oil is a commodity traded on the world market America competes with the rest of the world for oil. Now the two largest consumers of petroleum products are India and China, all that oil filters its way back to the American public by way of Wal Mart not as gasoline but as consumer products.

Mr. King wrote an excellent article on who should shoulder at least their share of the blame for some of the excesses we find ourselves enjoying at the expense of the environment. It’s easy to turn our backs on our own responsibility and blame Presidents, Industry, and Government, easy but not fair.

We’ve met our enemy and they’re us.”

I’ve written this story many times I finally have someone standing with me thanks to Dale King.
