The Judge, Not Jesus Christ, Is The Master Of The Courtroom
Hawaii Circuit Judge Patrick Border rightly took umbrage when defendant Junior Stowers raised his hands and testified, "Thank you, Jesus!" in court when he learned a jury found him innocent of abusing his son.
The jury found Stowers not guilty of hitting his 15-year-old son with a broomstick.
The judge who doesn't suffer any fools, held Stowers in contempt of court for the outburst and threw him in jail. Stowers learned the hard way that a judge and not Jesus is the master of the courtroom.
Stowers, 47, sat in a cellblock for about six hours until the judge granted him a hearing on the contempt charge and released him.
The judge at a July 7 hearing, dropped the contempt charge, a petty misdemeanor that carries up to 30 days in jail.
Why are Christians so quick to thank Jesus for things he had nothing to do with? When the verdict was read, Stowers should have kept his mouth shut, but if he wanted to thank someone, he should have praised his lawyer or the jury.
You see the same thing at the scenes of tragedies where survivors thank Jesus, instead of heaping praise on the first responders.
Thank God for judges like Border who don't put up with any religious foolishness. Every last vestige of religion should be removed from a court of law. It's an outrage against democracy, decency and fairness that defendants make an oath to tell the truth by placing a hand on the Bible.
