Have you wondered what it takes to learn a new skill? There are 3 main parts...

1) Education

2) Experience

3) Feedback

How important do you think each factor is in learning?

1) Education - 10%

2) Experience - 70%

3) Feedback - 20%

What does this mean? If you want to learn something new education (classes, MBA, formal or informal education) is only 1/10 of what you need to effectively learn something new.

Experience comes with time and with the work you do. If you're wanting to get more experience quicker try volunteering for assignments that would help you. If you want to get better at public speaking volunteering to speak at an event, join toastmasters, or present something at work.

The piece that often gets left out of the equation is the feedback. How do you get feedback? Since this piece gets left off you have to actively find this piece. Ask someone that knows what they are doing for help. You will want someone who is more of a mentor that will help you on a regular basis and try to avoid having someone different each time you receive feedback. You wouldn't want a new doctor each time you have a checkup.

What does an effective program look like?

• Initial training to learn a skill

• Perform the skill on a regular basis

• While actively practicing your new skill spend about 10% of the time continuously training and learning. Spend about 20% of the time getting feedback.

At work spend about 1 week a quarter with training and spend about every 5th 1x1 meeting with your boss as a feedback session.

You might also want to consider a coach/mentor. They can give you feedback, assignments to give you experience, and education to continuously learn.
