When learning a new skill there are three parts 1) Experience 2) Feedback (or someway to know if you are on course) 3) Education. Experience counts for 70% of learning a new skill. Feedback counts for 20% of learning and Education is 10% of learning. Excel for Dummies is great for the education but you really need the experience and feedback. Here are some ways to help you with the experience and feedback.

Volunteer for Assignments. Practice, practice, practice, if an opportunity comes to make a spreadsheet then take it. The more you practice the easier things get.

Ask for an Opinion. Ask your boss or someone you trust for their opinion on how the spreadsheet is working. Be sure to realize that it´s just feedback and not to take it personally. It can only help you in the long run.

Keep the skills sharp. After your office has the new skill set, you want to make sure they are current and do not lose what they have learned. The best way to do this is to practice and take refresher courses on what´s new and what´s changed. These tips are a good starting point on how to be faster by using Office. The big points are to make sure you keep learning and practicing to get faster.

Have a Detailed Training Plan. Keep your learning efforts focused. Learn only 1 to 2 skills at a time and map out which skills you want to learn and when you want to learn it. You might want to consider an online training program. Research done at the University of California Northridge showed that students who participated in online classes scored 20% higher on evaluations. Corporations save between 50-70 percent when replacing face-to-face instructor-led training with electronic content delivery.

Use YouTube and Google. A lot of the information you need can be found by going to www.YouTube.com or www.Google.com and searching for the task you´re looking for. It´s always good to get multiple sources for your education.

Following these tips will make your office much more productive and getting them to work smarter not harder.
