PowerPoint is a great tool for presentations but it can be used incorrectly. Think of it like hammering in a nail with a hammer. There are many ways to get the nail hammered but you want the nail to go in straight and not at any angle or go in bent. Here are 5 tips to make your presentation better:

1) Be Consistent. You want all of your text to have similar look and feel. The way to do this is by using the slide master. Slide master is where you can change how each type of slide will look and feel with the formatting. Itīs a great way to change all of your slide formatting with only a few clicks.

2) Do Not Read The Slides. Slides are designed to be an aid. Not all the information should be on the slide, you should speak to any information not in the PowerPoint slide. If you have too much information on a slide and you are reading it to the audience then your presentation becomes more like a book reading and maybe even a bedtime story for some.

3) Be Flexible. Presentations don not have to be presented in a straight line. Meaning you do not have to go from slide 1 to slide 2 to slide 3. Feel free to move around slide 1 to slide 5 to slide 2 etc. This is done by putting hyperlinks in the slides.

4) Use Appropriate Animation. Animation is very useful but can be over used. The rules of thumb to follow are that an animation should not take longer than 5 seconds and should not distract the audience from what the presenter is saying. Remember its used to enhance the presentation not distract from the presentation.

5) Practice the presentation. After finishing your presentation proofread it but also read it aloud. Practicing will work a different part of your brain and you will find and correct errors you otherwise would not find. If you can, present it to someone else so they can catch errors as well.

These tips are a good starting point on how to make a more effective PowerPoint presentation. Just remember to have a set of rules and guidelines to follow and you will be more successful in your presentation.
