Using Microsoft Word is a little like driving. You know how to operate a car but to make it useful you have to follow the rules of the road. Word is similar, you can know how to use the software but following guidelines can make you r document more effective. Here are some tips:

1) Use the Matching Colors. Make sure your colors match. A good professional combination would be using black, dark green, dark blue. A bad combination would be yellow, light green, light blue. These colors would be hard to read unless you changed the background color. Remember use colors that will show well on the background you choose. An example of good colors would be using dark red, dark green, and black as your color combinations for a white background. A bad example would be using bright yellow, bright green, and light blue for a white background.

2) Use Emphasis. Similar to the colors make sure you use emphasis in the right places. Emphases include making text bold, italic, or underline. Use it for distinction and emphasis. If you use them too much then they lose their effectiveness. Let´s take a look at good and bad examples:

Example of good emphasis: How to make a presentation: The most important factor is being interesting to your audience. Topics should be relevant and informative.

Example of bad emphasis: How to make a presentation: The most important factor is being interesting to your audience. Topics should be relevant and informative.

3) Be Structured. When you write with word be sure you know what you´re writing. Once you determine what you´re writing then determine what flow structure you will use. An example would be you are writing an essay and you use the following format: Intro paragraph that contains your topic and each of the points, following paragraphs are points that support your topic, and the final paragraph has your conclusion. Resumes would have the flow of starting with the objective then moving into experience then your education and skills. These rules are not set in stone and depend on your preference.

4) Do Research. Thanks to the internet you have almost all of the world´s knowledge at your fingertips. Seeing how other people would do the same thing you are doing will help you get ideas on how to design your work.

5) Read Aloud. After finishing your document proofread it but also read it aloud. Reading aloud will work a different part of your brain and you will hear and catch things you normally would not catch. If you can read it aloud to someone else so they can hear any discrepancies.

These tips are a good starting point on how to make Microsoft Word a more effective tool for you. Just remember to have a set of rules and guidelines to follow and you will be more successful in your writing.
