Dictator Meles´s Reign: Stopping at nothing in his crushing Scheme
As the ruling party consist almost without exception of men and women who have held office before, during and since the armed struggle against the Military regime, their Convention will, according to custom, be constituted, officered, and engineered by themselves, or by their henchmen, or by both combined. EPRDF functionaries, accustomed to evil scheme and to control, who have held every office imaginable, and who are resolutely bent on being office-holders while life lasts, can always manipulate a Convention of their own party gotten up by themselves; can always procure for themselves to be nominated or appointed by their own nominees.
The rank and file of their party are as obedient to them as were the rank and file of the ´National/EPRDF Army´ when they were its officers. The rank and file may murmur because they get little or nothing, but what can they do against those who are accustomed to command them, and to whom they are conditioned to render obedience? Our young and promising politicians may feel disappointed because they are kept in the dark, but they can be quieted by promises, and by giving them opportunities to ventilate their anger in the lame duck Parliament.
Democratic rule, in the Ethiopian context, means minority rule. The ethnic composition of the Core of EPRDF, the movers and shakers of the party and by extension the entire nation, amounts to only 5% of the entire population, but EPRDF is effectively controlled by a minority of itself, constituted of the habitual office-seekers and chronic office-holders.
The political condition of Ethiopia is in a sad state. Ethiopia is not merely corrupted politician-ridden, but it is also minority-ridden, ruled by the minority of a party that is itself in a minority.
