Only a few things in life are certain and one of those is change. When you combine change with technology and skills then you have an opportunity. You can stay either where you are or change by learning and adapting to the new technology and techniques. I´ve been asked many times about training and here are some frequently asked questions and their answer:

Q: Why is it important to have a regular training program?

A: you should never stop learning or training. It´s like using a saw, it starts sharp but after use it becomes dull unless you keep sharpening it. Training is sharpening the saw so you are at your sharpest and most effective

Q: Is it really worth the effort to train? Can´t I learn the material on my own?

A: Some people are whiz kids with technology and can grasp things right away and for them they can probably learn on their own unless they want to save time then a training program will make sure they are up-to-speed. Other people may not be so good at learning and will need a little more help. Everyone is different but by having regular training you will save time and possible money by being more efficient. Increasing the educational level of employees in an establishment by one year raises productivity by as much as 8.5% in manufacturing plants and almost 13% in non-manufacturing establishments.

Q: How will training effect my pay? Will it help me be paid more?

A: Studies show there is a computer wage premium of 13-25% for people who are familiar with common software packages, such as Microsoft Office. (Hamilton, B. Returns to Computer Skills and Black-White Wage Differentials. John M. Olin School of Business, Mimeo.) There is clearly a benefit from a time and money aspect to be trained and stay sharp.
