When talking about training our office to use desktops, notebooks, and/or laptops we normally think about how to be more effective with technology. Here are 5 tips to help you and your office be more effective at using technology.

1) Use the right tools for the right job.

I like to use the analogy "donīt use a jack hammer to crack open a walnut." Computers are tools and if you start thinking that way can save you a great deal of time and money in training your office in what they really need. An example might be you need to do some statistical analysis. Microsoft Excel has many built in features that help you with perform many statistical operations and if you learn how to use Microsoft Excel, you can avoid buying much more complex and expensive software.

2) Learning computers has a learning curve.

Everyone has different levels of ability but the key is to hone in on what the person needs to learn. If you take 10 minutes to do an assessment of what a person needs you can prescribe a much more effective training plan.

3) Have a plan.

You donīt become a doctor by just learning bits and pieces of information and then putting it all together. Having a comprehensive structured training plan will make sure that the office is consistent with their skills. It also makes sure that you cover any gaps in their knowledge.

4) Be proactive.

As new software and techniques come out you will want to keep you and your office current. This way you arenīt left behind and you stay relevant.

5) Consider online training.

A study by sociologist Jerald G. Schutte, of California State University at Northridge found that online students had more peer contact with others in the class, enjoyed it more, spent more time on class work, understood the material better, and performed 20% better than students who were taught in the traditional classroom. Not only can it be more effective but you also donīt have to travel and with some programs, you can learn at your own pace.

If you follow these 5 tips, you will have a more effective work force that stays relevant and efficient with technology.
