Jackson Browne and Steve Earle Aug 1st 2009 at CMAC in Canandaigua NY
I attended this show with a good friend of mine Eric. We made it in around 6:30. The crowds had already assembled as the buzz grew for the coming night. We found our seats quick and then it was off for a couple of cold ones.
A couple hours earlier Eric had been helping me cut down a couple older, massive, dead trees that overhung his home, I found myself with a chainsaw perched and swinging like Tarzan wondering if I would even make the show this night. After all the work was done and the home was still intact, the reward would be this Jackson Browne, Steve Earle concert and a couple of cold ones to shake the day´s heat exhaustion.
We walked a bit and talked about the show as the 8 o´clock start grew near. Now I myself am a huge fan of both artist and Eric a longtime Jackson Browne fan, but he did not know of Steve Earle as I assured him that he would be well worth it. The time was at hand. The show was getting ready to begin.
Steve Earle takes the stage with his acoustic guitar and harmonica is ready to go. This man is a true student of music and has lived it in every sense. He became friends with Townes Van Zandt and the rest is history. His new album is a deep reminder of the great talent of his friend "Townes" also the title of the album.
Steve Earle picks, plays and talks drawing you in, using that great gift only some musician´s posses. It is this gift that has this audience laughing and stomping their feet and grooving along, most of them are really not aware of Earle as a musician, they are here to see Jackson Browne such as my friend. Steve Earle I am sure he has earned them as fans forever after this night.
He switches his guitars and even goes to I believe a mandolin for a couple tunes. Greats like Pancho and Lefty fill the air as well as other obscure songs. What is apparent tonight is that Steve Earle came to play and play well. By the time he is done the crowd is on its feet in an uproar. I am thinking what a blessed person I am on this night to witness this show.
The intermission and off for a couple more cold ones, Eric even bought one for another older gentleman that was at the show with his wife after he commented that those tall Molson beers looked good. They are 10 bucks but well worth it cold, I have paid 8 bucks for half the amount of beer at other venues.
Jackson Browne hits the stage in typical fashion of a musician of his caliber. The lighting and the mood is right tonight. The crowd is in love with what they hear. The back up vocals and band are all in tune as the Maestro sets the tempo for tonight 2 hour show. This night is a mix of the well known classics and songs off his newer works from "Time the Conqueror".
Jackson Browne proves why he has the fans and staying power as an artist of his caliber. This night ends well and as far as I can tell with many fans smiling ear to ear. A night well worth the money spent. The Constellation Brands Marvin Sands performing arts center continues to show why they are a stop for many choice musicians.
