Rare Sports Memorabilia Collection Gets Boost from These Guides

Some outstanding resources have become available in recent years for those looking to put together rare sports memorabilia collections.

Whether one collects vintage baseball cards, is looking to price a collection or simple enjoys learning about the hobby, there are a few items which stand out according to Rob Lifson, president of Robert Edward Auctions, one of the industry's most respected companies.

In a recent email to customers, he highlighted some of his recommendations including:

1) The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin & Company (1886-1890)

Special thanks to collectors Jay Miller, Joe Gonsowski, and Richard Masson for the extraordinary contribution they have made to the collecting world with their recent publication of the ultimate volume devoted to Old Judge baseball cards, entitled "The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin & Company (1886-1890)". This 457-page full color coffee-table style book is the most thoroughly researched and ambitious baseball card project that we have ever seen.

It is absolutely a must-have for anyone interested in the history of baseball cards, Old Judge baseball cards in particular, or nineteenth-century baseball. This book deserves an honored place in every baseball or card reference library. Until this book arrived, we could never have imagined that a book on Old Judges of this magnitude and quality was even possible. We cannot imagine how many hundreds - or thousands - of hours of work that were invested in this project. The publishing of this important volume is a great gift from these gentlemen to the collecting community.

Extra important note from REA: While $125 may sound like a lot for any book, in this particular case, it is our strong opinion that this is an incredible bargain, and when you get this extraordinary coffee table style volume, we think you will agree.

2) Sweet Recollections: The Story of the Philadelphia Caramel Company of Camden, New Jersey

Erik Varon has produced the definitive work on the Philadelphia Caramel Company, including the history of the company and all of their many card issues. For information about this important reference book, please visit the following website exclusively devoted to it which includes a tremendous amount of information about this great book, including excerpts and ordering information:

3) Vintage Pennant Price Guide (Baseball and Football Edition).

Collectors have been collecting pennants since the turn-of-the-century, but there has never before been a comprehensive illustrated price guide. Until now! Mike Egner has just published the very first illustrated guide devoted to pennants. Included are over 1,200 illustrations, all with values and rarity rankings, of pennants from the 1910 era all the way through the 1970s. Included, for example, are photos of over 50 different Brooklyn Dodgers pennants, 80+ different Yankees pennants, sections covering the Negro League and All Star Game pennants, as well as a complete football pennant section. This is a valuable reference work of potential interest to many types of collectors, all the more so as there is virtually nothing in the way of reference material relating to pennants. B&W. 210 pages.

4) Baseball Pinback Buttons by Dr. Paul Muchinsky. This book was published in 2004, and to this day it is the single greatest reference book on baseball pinback buttons that has ever been published, and may ever be published! It is a must-have for any collector with a special interest in baseball pinbacks. It is a gem, 592 pages in length, printed on gloss enamel paper, and featuring 3,260 full color illustrations, all in actual size. Its production was a true gift from one of the hobby´s finest gentleman, and it is a great pleasure to report that it is still available to collectors at the Great Oaks Press website.

Lifson also highlighted Vintage Card Prices and Card Pricer, two online price guide services for sports cards.

Rare sports memorabilia collections have proven to be worthwhile investments and these are some excellent reference tools.
