The Rights of Citizens

Tim Williams
The case of the eight year old California girl whose lemonade stand was shut down because of the location and lacking proper permits reminds us that the government has evoked the kind of wrong full indignation that has perpetuated and penetrated every level of our society. This attitude has allowed the government to dictate what a person can or can not do in regards to being a sole entrepreneur. A little girl with big aspirations, enthusiasm, and a willingness for an entrepreneur spirit has been suddenly crushed by big bureaucratic government. The United States was founded and began with the self reliance of it's citizens eagerness to pursue that entrepreneur spirit. This spirit has brought America the reputation that this country is where every citizen can achieve their goals without the intrusion of government.

It wasn't long ago that a person who desired to open up just a small lemonade stand similar to this child in California was able to do so without the government requiring any special permits or licensing in which they must have to operate. Their are many reasons why now government is requiring any individual who wishes to just have some sort of income whether it be a small lemonade stand or selling homemade cookies to register and purchase special permits and licensees. The biggest one is that cities and local governments do not have enough tax revenue coming into their budgets because of the diminished jobs, stagnant or reduced wages that was once sufficient to cover the mandated expenditures and services that any local government is required to provide. Another factor to consider is that today all government whether it is local, state, and federal is so blotted with massive red tape, duplication of departments, and complete lack of oversight it is amazing that anything constructive gets accomplished. The requiring of special permits and licenses for any child who wants to be part of that entrepreneur spirit is just another reason why any government is so blotted. If governments think that this will bring in more revenue to their budgets they will have to look elsewhere for any additional revenue.

The rights of our citizens especially our children have been slowly and effectively been eradicated to the point that government has taken upon itself to dictate how and what individuals must have in order to pursue and achieve any degree of success or failure when it comes to operating any form of individual enterprise. What's need now is for our society to realize that children need to be encouraged to pursue that entrepreneur spirit without any local government dictating what they must have in order to open and operate any form of individual business. This instills the motivation and cultivates the passion for a lifelong pursuit of being a self reliant individual. Let's encourage this type of behavior in our youth today instead of making it almost impossible or directly inhibiting them from pursuing any form of individual entrepreneur endeavors
