Solar Power Roof Vents: Can They Work For You?

Definition of solar power and solar power roof vents

All of us are now aware of the tremendous benefits of sunrays. Indeed, the ever-increasing awareness regarding the advantages of solar power has made everyone take note of this. When the atmosphere absorbs sunrays, radiant energy is created and this is due to the presence of electro-magnetic waves. As per our needs, this energy can also be transformed into other forms of energy as well. The process by which solar power generators trap and convert radiant energy is called solar energy. Various alternative solar power generator devices are currently in use. Among them, the solar power roof vents have become the most popular, since they score over the others due to the additional benefits that they offer.

Need for solar power roof vents and their working mechanism

For adequate ventilation facilities of any house, having roof vents, whether run by electricity or solar power, is an absolute must. During the summer, the roof tiles in any home get heated up by the radiant energy that the sun generates. This in turn, results in the warming of the entire air in the home. Hence, to keep our homes cool, proper ventilation facilities, particularly in the attic or the top floor, is required. Also, many of our everyday household chores (like, cooking, cloth-washing and having a shower) generates large amounts of water vapor, which also needs to be ventilated out. Hence, every house should ideally have a well-designed roof vent.

For cooling purposes, solar power roof vents are indeed an ideal addition to any home. A solar power roof vent generally works all round the day, contrary to the usual roof louvers that were used earlier. These roof vents receive sunlight, capture it to generate solar energy, after which, electric power is produced from this source. The electricity is actually generated by a motor, functioning at high levels of efficiency, which is present inside the power vent. Thus, the process helps to preserve the atmosphere and puts a stop to unnecessary wastage of power. In general, a thermostat regulates the functioning of ordinary electric energy vents. As soon as these vents get heated up, they stop working. However, unlike them, solar power vents are able to keep a house properly ventilated all through the day, by working continuously. Much to the convenience of users, no waste is generated, or pollution caused, due to the usage of these vents. No additional fuel is required either. The solar power vents make external air come in through the attic and then, the air moves out of the vent. This provides a sort of active ventilation service, ensuring that the place is properly cooled. Also, since the roof vents result in the air inside your home remaining cool, the necessity of using air conditioners goes down too. Hence, the electricity bill go down as a natural consequence.

There are two separate principal components of an average solar vent: a DC motor of 24 volts and a solar panel. It is aimed at capturing and storing solar energy directly from the sun. The DC motor then receives this energy, and converts it to electrical power. The solar panel can easily collect solar energy even on days that are cloudy, with diffused light conditions, or on days of bad weather. Apart from the above, the technique of using solar power has certain other added advantages too. For example, no extra electric wiring networks are required for installing the system, and the unit is generally put up independent of the dome. The dome used is generally of a low profile and is galvanized. In most cases, it is made of rust resistant steel.

Merits and demerits of solar power roof vents

If used in the proper manner, the solar power roof vents are great for saving power. The power-saving capacity of the vents however, depends on a few factors. These include the amount of space in a home that is taken up by the attic, the expertise with which the attic had been insulated, the rate at which electric power is received and the ventilation facilities that is present. Passive air convection is the technique of working of most conventional attic vents. However, the solar power vents help to keep a home more or less cool all round the day, since air is forced into the house at all times by these vents. However, usage of solar power roof vents is not without its associated disadvantages. For example, if a house, or a building, has a drop ceiling, solar power roof vents cannot offer too many benefits. The same is the case with homes that are already so designed as to facilitate free and smooth circulation of air. However, the solar energy powered roof vents are being used more and more today. Indeed, these vents are ideal for lighting up your house by using solar energy, and for driving out excess amounts of moisture as well.

Thus, it is pretty evident that there are both economic as well as ecology-related advantages associated with the usage of solar power. Hence, it does make practical sense to have solar power roof vents installed. In fact, you can have the system set up on your own too. However, to do so, you will need to know the steps of installation of the system, the place where the system would function with maximum efficiency, and the way to do the wiring. You would also need to know the basic safety guidelines, and should be aware of how to get relatively cheaper components, along with free batteries. Once you have all this information, you can easily and quickly set up your home solar power system, and watch it start functioning efficiently.
