Business Person of the Week: Dr. Josef Passley
I took a counseling class in college during my first semester of my sophomore year to satisfy an elective requirement. However, during the course of the counseling class I began to develop a keen interest in the field of psychology. I became interested in astutely discovering what the causes were behind a person´s attitudes and behaviors, along with knowing how to treat them effectively. After the class, I decided to major in counseling and was on a mission to obtain a Ph.D. degree in clinical psychology. I knew that one day I wanted to open an independent private practice that could provide comprehensive mental health services for individuals who need help with their problems.
What do you want others to know about you?
I believe in the value of hard work. I strongly believe anyone can accomplish anything they desire if they are willing to work hard, be persistent and never give up. My parents instilled these values upon me throughout my childhood. I faithfully exercise their principle in my daily professional activities. My goal is to help every client to the best of my ability to become psychologically healthy and overcome their problems.
What do like you and dislike about your community?
My community focuses on mentoring the youth which I believe in today´s society is invaluable. Young people more than ever need mentors as there is an increase of families fragmenting in many of our nation´s communities. Community mentoring aids both boys and girls who are feeling the effects of their family problems. I feel proud to be a part of a community that focuses on mentoring the nation´s youth. I believe there could be more of a focus on early childhood education public programs. The earlier a child becomes prepared academically the greater the outcome for them academically and professionally. My hope is that in the future this area will become a strength rather than a weakness.
What's your most memorable moment in life?
There are many memorable moments that I will never forget. However, my most memorable moment academically was obtaining my Ph.D. degree in clinical psychology. I worked very hard for many years to obtain the degree and had to overcome many obstacles. There were some individuals who thought that I could never accomplish such an arduous task at such a young age. However my faith in God, continuous support from my parents, and my personal belief that I could accomplish anything that I put my mind to was what I needed to overcome the naysayers. When I walked across the stage to receive my degree under the age of 30-years-old after setting the goal as a sophomore made this moment a memorable one for me. The degree was a culmination of perseverance, faith, and discipline. Celebrating the achievement with my family will always be a memorable moment in my mind.
