What Skills Do You Need To Become A Pro Forex Trader?

James Woolley
A lot of people who develop an interest in forex trading automatically assume that they need some specific skills to become a professional trader. That is true to some extent however you certainly do not need any professional qualifications. In fact there are very few barriers to entry whatsoever.

While it's true that you do need a lot of qualifications (or very good contacts) in order to get a job trading currencies for a major financial institution, if you want to trade for yourself you don't need any qualifications at all. All you need is a computer (with an internet connection) and some capital so you can start trading your own account.

Many professional traders, and I include myself in that category, work from the comfort of their own home and make a very good living from forex trading. I do actually have a degree in Accounting and Finance myself, but that didn't help me become a successful forex trader in any way whatsoever. Indeed I know several professional traders who have no qualifications at all.

So are there any skills that you do need to become a pro trader?

Well I always think that a basic education in maths, and arithmetic in particular, will help you out and save you time throughout the day, but other than that I would say there are a few attributes that you need, rather than specific skills.

The first of these is motivation and the determination to succeed. Forex trading is an extremely challenging profession and most people only become successful after extensive testing. They may even blow up a few trading accounts in the process. Very few people are lucky enough to start generating consistent profits straight away so you really do need to be focused and highly motivated.

You also need a lot of discipline if you want to be successful. This is very often put to the test when you experience a few consecutive losing trades. If you can hold your nerve and stick to your existing trading system (which has proven to be profitable in the long term) then you pass the discipline test. However if you start upping your stakes and chasing your losses after a few losers then I'm afraid that forex trading is probably not for you.

Anyone can become a successful forex trader whether male, female, young or old, and you certainly don't need any particular skills or qualifications. However if you are serious about becoming a professional and highly profitable trader, then you do need to be focused, motivated and disciplined because these attributes are just as important as the trading system you use to generate these profits.
