EF1 Tornado Hits Western NY Leaving A Trail Of Damage
An EF1 tornado touched down around 4:50 p.m. eastern time and caused major damages in Western NY today. No serious injuries were reported.
The tornado was first reported in the town of Darien, NY the tracked north – north east for 4 miles into the town of Corfu, NY.
Wind speeds were upwards of the 105 miles an hour giving it a rating of EF1 on the newly revised Enhanced Fujita Scale that measures according to damage. The rating for an EF1 tornado is 86 - 110 MPH winds and can cause moderate damage.
Roofs can be stripped of there shingles, mobile homes can be severely damaged and or over turned, doors, windows, and exterior of homes can be also damaged and also can cause failures of structure in older buildings such as barns and poorly constructed buildings .
In this case damage was widespread from Darien, NY and well into other areas of Western, NY as this storm moved at a north – north east direction finally making its way out over Lake Ontario.
The damaged ranged from trees being snapped and uprooted to a barn and green house being completely leveled. Power lines and other debris and vehicle damage are widespread and clean up is underway at this current hour. Numerous homes were damaged.There are around 250 or so homes still without power tonight as crews work to restore power.
No serious injuries are reported although there are some reports of minor injuries do to broken glass and other debris. This tornado lasted roughly ten minutes. The path carved by this tornado is close to 100 yards in width. An aerial view will be underway to determine and get a better idea of the damage that was caused. There were numerous sightings of funnel clouds around the area yet they could not be confirmed. There was also localized flooding associated with this storm.
Tornadoes are rare in this area of the country but do occur. The last recorded tornado in Genesee County NY was September 3 1993 that produced two fatalities. New York's worst tornado was on November 16 1989. A down-burst type storm that was investigated by Professor Fujita on request of that time New York State governor Mario Cuomo after it was thought to be a tornado and is still widely disputed. That storm claimed the lives of nine elementary children when a poorly designed wall collapsed. From 1950 to 1995 tornadoes have claimed 21 lives and caused close to 150 injuries in New York State. The strongest record tornado in New York State was an F4.
