´can't find a reiserfs file system´ Linux Error

Jonny Defh

Linux superblock is responsible for holding general information about the file system. An Ext3 file system is different from a ReiserFS file system because they have dissimilar file system type, size and mount status defined in their corresponding superblocks. Among other information, superblock also contains information about other file system metadata structures. This information is used by file system manager to maintain the integrity of file system. Just in case if file system gets corrupted, each block group contains its duplicate copy to restore it later.

However, in general conditions the superblock located in Block Group 0 is read. Superblock errors usually indicate that file system is corrupted and thereby make data inaccessible. To cope up with such problems, you require valid data backup as the first prerequisite. But in case no clean backup is available, you will need to use Data Recovery Linux applications.

As an instance, when you try to mount a Linux partition formatted to ReiserFS file system, it gives the following error:

"read_super_block: can't find a reiserfs file system"

Cause

The most possible cause for such errors to occur in ReiserFS partition is superblock corruption. A superblock might get corrupted due to any of the following reasons:

• Accidental errors by Linux Sys administrator

• Power outage

• Faulty device driver or software

• Kernel bugs

Solution

To overcome superblock corruption with ReiserFS formatted partitions, you need to follow these methods:

• Execute the following command to check file system integrity:

# reiserfsck --check /dev/sda1

• If running the above command reports that superblock is missing, you should then run the below command to fix superblock:

# reiserfsck --rebuild-sb /dev/sda1

Note: You should not run this command twice as it might introduce more damages to the affected ReiserFS partition.

If fsck is unable to fix superblock issues, you should reformat the drive and use your recent data backup to restore lost information. But at times, backup errors or unavailability causes backup to be unviable. In such situations, it is recommended to use Linux Recovery software for completely restoring the lost data. Designed with powerful Data Recovery Linux technology, these products provide you an interactive user interface.

Stellar Phoenix Linux Data Recovery is a well-built tool to locate and recover lost data using powerful scanning technology. It is a non-destructive tool that supports safe Data Recovery Linux for Ext2, Ext3 and ReiserFS file systems. It supports almost all of the Linux distributions.
