Train Accident Attorney Reports that Train Operator Blacked Out Before Crash
According to a union official, the train operator identified as Henry Gray blacked out prior to cashing into a parked train that injured 47 people, with 4 in critical condition, including Gray. Union President Irwin Lum stated the loss of consciousness occurred due to a medical condition.
Rachael Kagan spokeswoman for Sn Francisco General Hospital stated that two of the injured victims are in good condition, one passenger is in fair condition and one injured victim was transferred to another hospital for non medical reasons. Kagen also stated that 15 of the injured victims were treated at the San Francisco General Hospital, with 11 of the injury victims treated and released.
Lum stated that the train operators are under pressure to keep the trains on schedule and turn off the automatic controls in order to speed the loading and unloading of passengers at the West Portal Station. He also said that it was assumed it was a procedure that was alright, since passengers were complaining about long waits getting to the platforms.
According to the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, the train operator began as a San Francisco bus driver in 1979 and began operating light rail trains in 2007. It has also been stated that Gray had not been involved in any other major accidents prior to Saturday´s crash. Train accident lawyers in San Francisco are awaiting the findings of fault and seeking clients who were injured in the train collision.
The National Transportation Safety Board reported Sunday during their ongoing investigation stated that Gray had turned the automatic controls of prior to the collision according to Mr. Turpin. Turpin also stated the train operator did not engage the emergency break and a mechanical inspection of the train so far has not revealed any problems.
