Michael Moore's 'Sicko' on T.V. Tonight

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

The Movie Channel, this evening, will be airing the Oscar-nominated documentary, "Sicko," Michael Moore's film about a villain known as the health insurance industry. With the debate raging in Washington, D.C. -- Republicans trying to scuttle it, the President trying to hang on to his public option, and nearly a hundred members of Congress pushing for a single-payer system -- showing "Sicko" tonight is very timely. Mike lays out all the facts and the arguments as to why the private insurance companies are never going to side with what's best for the American people.

"Sicko" Is scheduled to air on The Movie Channel on July 27th at 4:05 PM and on TMC Xtra on August 2nd at 10:45 PM and August 5th at 2:15 AM and 7:30 AM. Click here for showtimes.

There are people around the country who are holding "Sicko" viewing parties this weekend in their homes. Check out this call to revisit "Sicko" on the Daily Kos this week.

We are in a critical time regarding which direction the health care debate is going to go. Make your voice heard. And be armed with the facts. Watch "Sicko" again!

Thanks.

Fun with SICKO.

Health care summer is upon us.

At the end of the month, on July 30, there will be a massive Single Payer Rally in DC. Buses and other transportation options (as well as alternative lobbying ideas if you can't get to DC) are available on the web site.

If you watched Bill Moyers' recent report, featuring CIGNA whistleblower Wendell Potter, recently diaried by citisven you may, like me, have a yearning to see the whole movie. The clip is short but powerful, showing Moore scouring the offices in a Canadian and a British hospital, looking for the billing department. The baffled reactions to his search are priceless.

One of the things that Potter reveals in his interview with Bill Moyers, is how the industry worked hard to discredit SICKO when it came out.

We have the power to undo that: we can stage a SICKO Renaissance.

(Personal comment from Joseph Raglione...> Sicko is the best documentary I have seen in my lifetime. It exposes the facts, provides a comparison study, provides answers and for a conclusion, recreates itself as a love story. It also makes me happy to be a Canadian.)

How to stage a SICKO Renaissance?

At the very least, I recommend that we all take a(nother) look at the film. If you have cable, SICKO will be showing on TMC this Thursday evening at 8 pm. You can also find it on google (h/t to miss SPED).

And of course you can buy a copy if you haven't already.

Debate is underway, and the public option is under siege. Meanwhile, we can all do our part to raise consciousness among our nearest and dearest so that folks are aware of the full range of alternatives. I'm always amazed to find that friends and relations don't quite understand how national insurance works, and how susceptible they can be to the insurance industry's bogus claims of meddling government bureaucrats.

(Anybody been on the phone lately with an insurance industry bureaucrat? Stories would be great--please share).

As for SICKO, I have to confess I didn't watch it when it came out. Though I love Michael Moore's work (F9/11 still brings me to tears when I see it), as an expatriate Canadian (now US citizen), I didn't feel like I needed to be told about the benefits of national health insurance: I grew up with it! I took it for granted. It was an invisible protection that I never, ever had to think about. And even with a dandy private plan now, I miss the transparency, flexibility and choice of the plan I left in Canada.

So I'm going to do my part. My stories about the glories of the Canadian system just don't seem persuade people like I feel that they should. So, I've decided to rely on a better persuader. I'm buying the film and am hosting a party this Saturday night, inviting some elderly relations as well as friends to join in for food & viewing & conversation.

Over the next two weeks, as July wanes and final preparations for the July 30 march in DC are underway, won't you hold a SICKO viewing party in your house as well?

Taking a hard look at a viable, affordable alternative to for-profit health insurance could shift the tenor of the whole debate.

About Joseph Raglione
Hi! I am the executive director of the World Humanitarian Peace and Ecology Movement. I began as an environmental activist in 1969 and basically, never stopped! I Graduated College in Social Science and registered as a non-profit corporation in 1988 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. I am one of a very few non-profit and generic freedom loving journalists left on Earth, and I continue today to study and to understand the problems connected with human activity on this Planet. My affiliates include: GreenPeace, the Nature Conservancy, the Bio-diversity organization, the Sierra Club, the David Suzuky foundation, the WWF, Amnesty International, World Vision, the IUF organization; as well as the wonderful and independant N.A.S.A. scientists studying our Planet's weather systems. Of course NASA also studies the mysteries of the Eternal Universe with satelite generated images and, over the years, have generously allowed me and thousands of our world scientists to study over their shoulder's via the Internet.
In spite of some past U.S. government repression, NASA continues to provide solid evidence of global warming.
NASA has provided me with pictorial evidence of Rainforest deforestation within: Jakarta, Peru, Africa, Brazil and even in Western Canada!
The motivation for such destruction continues to be (often illegally) for: lumber, for bio-fuels, and for Cattle ranching. Today, the perceived future profits for Palm Oil and for Bio-Fuels are prime motivators for environmental destruction. Small crop farming also contributes but that may be changing as farmers learn to protect the Rain-Forest.
With NASA imaging, there is proof that large city heat traps are helping global warming, and with (infrared images)there is proof that several hundred million gas burning vehicles (including ship and airplanes) presently create a hugh quantity of pollution tracks across both Oceans and Sky.
With oil, gas, Coal and Bio-Fuel heated buildings around the world creating C02 emissions, and with Methane release from all animal species...giant Ozone holes have been created and continue to exist above the North and South Poles. Ozone holes allow the Sun to radiate the Ice Caps and to accelerate the Ice melt, which releases more Methane into the atmosphere, which continues to thin out the Ozone. A vicious circle created by human need and also, unhappily, by human greed!
I have been asked to write to the Prime Minister of Japan to ask him to stop the murderous assault on endangered Whales. Every year, thousands of Whales are killed in the Antarctic with GreenPeace volunteers placing themselves between the Whales and the grenade tipped harpoons, and peope like myself, (I did not forget this is my "Bio," putting my old neck on the line attempting to change the situation by writing thousands if not millions of words!
Are words dangerous?
Over three hundred journalists were killed within the last ten years. You tell me if words are dangerous!
As I write these words, the desperate and starving in Darfur are waiting for rescue. I motivated a few kind hearted California Actors to visit the region and to report back. They did! They then created the Darfur coalition and they continue to fight to save the innocent victims trapped in tents in the desert of the Sudan. Darfuri's were attacked and moved from their homes because somebody believes there is Oil under the Sudan desert.
As I write this, a few sick and desperate people in Iraq are wrapping bombs around themselves in order to die in the name of God, and the list of humanitarian disasters continues. I also contribute information to the Reuter's news service. It is time for a change. Please help make it happen!
