This Week's Enemy Of The State: Ladies And Gentlemen, Introducing Mr. Jon Stewart

Stan Grimes
The Daily Show with Jon Stewart is what? Poisoning our children? Is he an enemy to democracy? Two political scientists, Jody Baumgartner and Jonathan S. Morris of East Carolina University, found college students watched the Daily Show more than hard-lined network news. They also found that college students held a more negative view of candidates and political figures after watching Jon Stewart and his Daily Show antics. Give me a break, please.

George Bush’s impact is negative on everyone, Daily Show or not. Really. Our beloved president doesn’t need the help of the Emmy Award winning cynic, Jon Stewart, to have a negative impact. He does quite well all by himself. Let’s talk about the real negative impact on college students. The real impact comes in the form of reality. Tuition costs have risen over ten percent in 2006 for public colleges. Now, that’s a negative impact.

Did the “Failing Republican Party, Can’t Move On.Org," pay for these two experts? Let’s blame a television comic for the Administration’s lousy public image. Let’s blame the “New York Times” for our president's overstepping of executive power. Our vice president said he was “offended” by the New York Times and the president implied the newspaper was treasonous. Give me a break. It seems the Republicans will blame anyone but themselves for failing to administer their duties legally and “up front.”

Whatever happened to freedom of the press? What is our current presidency worried about? What else is the Administration hiding? It seems that Ralph Waldo Emerson was correct when he so aptly said, "Knowledge is the antidote to fear." Our leaders in D.C. would much rather have the knowledge and keep their constituents living in fear. It makes power much more absolute and with that of course comes absolute corruption. The Bush Presidency just may be the most corrupt presidency in the history of our country. The Nixon Whitehouse comes in a close second.

Should we be concerned that Jon Stewart is corrupting our children? No. We should be more worried that the sarcasm being spewed on the Daily Show is true. The truth is the underlying enemy of the state and the truth is not something you’re going to see until we elect a man of truth as President. Is there such a person out there? Are there any honest politicians left? Out of three hundred million people there has to be an honest one somewhere, maybe Jon Stewart.
