Political patronization on South Asia´s terrorism

Joe Fleishman
South Asia´s terrorism is widely entangled with politics. Almost all the countries in that region somehow attached with terrorism. Things are not like countries in that region are promoting terrorism. But they have strong groups who support terrorism to gain political ground.

For example if you look at the Sri Lanka, LTTE became a vicious terrorist network. For more than 25 years they have killed thousands of innocent people. Their primary goal was a free Tamil land for them. This was what they said to separate them-selves with Sri Lanka´s unjustified behavior with its Tamil population. Normally these sorts of situations attract international attention. Here the result impacts oppositely. LTTE was considered as one of the terrorist organizations instead of freedom fighters.

They fought massive war with Sri Lankan army but ultimately ended up with an awesome defeat. Their leader Velupillai Prabhakaran ultimately became a terrorist leader rather than a symbol of liberty. Now Probhakaran era has end but reformation of LTTE in future will always remind the bad memories of the past.

Another South Asian neighborhood is Nepal. Maoist rebel continued years of terror campaign in that country. After long negotiation Maoists were join the peace process. These Maoists won the last election with 38 percent of the seats in the 601-member constituent assembly and formed the government. Now relatively stable Nepal cannot say how long this calmness will last.

India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan all are sharing the same problem, same religious fanaticism. These fanatics often create chaos in those nations. People of this area are religiously very sensitive and cleaver politicians are capitalizing their sentiment to win public support. Those who think in other ways politicians for political purpose make things difficult to them. These politicians know if people will loose their sensitivity – future of these politicians is grim.

Afghanistan and Pakistan are seriously influenced by religious politics. Many times religious leader are their major factor in politics. This is the reason why Al-Qaida militias are found it too easy to expand. Bangladesh is religiously not so fanatics like its neighbors. They approve some kind of peaceful co-existence. Although religious groups are always very active here and often the country is traumatized viewing sudden upsurge of terrorism. But general people are strongly against the fanaticism. Here too some political parties are often examining government activities whether they are derailed from the religion. They often accuse the government and try to win public opinion against government by saying the government is anti-Islamic.

India is also having similar religious extremism. Here Muslims and Hindus are always standing in a critically balanced peace. Sometimes this balance faces trouble. Every time it happens, it pushed the life of thousands in danger. In 2002 Hindu-Muslim riots killed over thousand people and displaced more than one hundred forty thousands –according to the officials.

Fanatics demolished the historical Babri Mosque in 1992 in India. Most of these incidence are encouraged by the political leaders with political view not literally religious.

So the political behavior is the chief reason of all terrorism in South Asia. One group here is fight against the fanaticism the others are fueling it. These leaders are not depending on their ability to convince people with their work or ideology instead they choose the easier way to become popular.
