In California safety and legal news, forty three year old Novato resident Ed Schaefer is looking at seventeen years to life in prison following a tragic incident where he hit a father and his young daughter while crossing the road with his motorcycle.

According to reports, the defendent allegedly had about 12 previous convictions for dui as well as a reckless driving charge. He is now looking at the charge of second degree murder, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated as well as driving under the influence plus mayhem to boot.

All in all, the charges in question stem from a May 27 accident in which he hit Aaron Osheroff and his 9-year-old daughter Melody, severely injuring both of them. The pair was taken to California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco, where Melody Osheroff was taken off life support the following day. The accident occurred at approximately 9:00 p.m. when the pair were crossing San Marin Drive on foot. For his part, Aaron Osheroff suffered massive injuries and remains in the hospital, after having extensive surgery on his left leg and having his right leg amputated.
