Economic and educational weakness result into Social backwardness:::
Tara Chand , Dy CM J&K had other day made a very poise statement ( main sirf himmat balee nahin kahoon ga ).What Tara Chand suggested was that members / families from reserved castes and tribes who have secured levels of socio economic grounds must on their own withdraw from availing the benefits as kept in services/ education/employment/ social security schemes for SC/ST/BC/OBC. To me there appeared to be a true saviour of the socially and economically backward masses agitating inside Tara Chand. But he will have to ride over the obstacles that leaders from his own caste ( from so called creamy layer ) would raise . So far no one has joined hands with him even by making a simple formal statement in his appreciation. Rather his call should have been taken by political leaders ( dalit leaders as commonly understood) from other Indian States as well . This shows the helpless conditions in which the school going children of economically and administratively weaker parents from SC/ST/OBC are even after the reservations provisions being there for over last 6 decades.
In the Constitution of India provisions were kept to take special care of some social groups from amongst those who identified them selves as Hindu ( religious classification). It was not that other religions or communities were religiously discriminated by the authors of Constitution of India by keeping special provisions of reservations only for those who identified themselves as Hindu. Fact was that the leaders from other religious communities like Muslims and Christians suggested that their communities had no internal social discriminations like some sects / castes in the Hindu had. Elders felt that in the Hindu society there were some extra ordinary social discriminations . Some castes ( social segments) discriminated the other. The discriminated people were mostly those who were economically weak in view of their elders having remained in menial service jobs ( by choice or under pressures of the mighty ) for centuries. They were engaged in low paid service professions. Continued economic weakness of most of such families had been resulting in educational weakness as well. And also administrative weakness. Hence such people were socially discriminated. But it has not happened only in the past. It happens in 2009 also. Social / class divisions do emerge out of the natural psychology that an ordinary human being carries. Economic weakness clubbed with educational backwardness can often result in social neglect to some individuals. Social divisions do emerge out of the natural psychology that an ordinary human being carries. Often we find that those who acquire administrative and financial superiorities often socially distance themselves from the weaker members of their own community. We must work to undo such changes in the mindset.
Those who are today taking of manubaad and four vernas invented by manu too are playing in the hands of the enemy. They are being mis carried by the wrong concept that the enemy had promoted. In case Manu had divided the society only in four vernas i.e Brahmin, khashatriya, vesahya and shudra, then from where today we have so many castes listed in the schedules prepared for helping the weaker sections with support of reservations in services and educations. From where so many other backward classes have emerged ? Has all this not emerged out of the "Manubaad" that was more invented during the times of foreign rules in India . Manubaad was lustfully carried along by post 1947 political leadership of India for vote bank politics.
India had and has age old history and literature. India was rich enough ( both material and knowledge resource wise). Since the Indian lands were rich materially, the Indian kings rarely invaded beyond boundaries of Bharat. But the riches of Bharat attracted many from other world. So many invaded towards India. But invaders experienced unexpected resistance due to cultural and historical bonds that the Indian people had. Rather India being a land of ancient knowledge and socio cultural traditions had been an irritant for those who tried to trespass Indian lands. So those who came from foreign lands to rule over India made all possible extra efforts to dismantle the Indian History, literature and traditions. The ancient history /descriptions on India were also got written to the choice of those who did not have their origin from the lands and traditions of Bharat / Indian subcontnent. Rich Indian history had always been a cause of grudge for many others.
India had been directly or indirectly under the foreign influence and control for last over 600 years before independence. This was the only period during which the modern science, literature, sociology and history was documented. All this documentation was done by non Indians for India. The British under the pressure of the swatantrata sangram too wanted to weaken Indian political wills. Hence we today read many things about India that may not be otherwise true.
India had been ruled by outsiders for centuries. The poverty had made many people even professionally very weak. The economically poor had grown in numbers. Those engaged in low grade service jobs were discriminated. Those who were economically poor were made by the rich to continue in the low grade professions and remain engaged in service jobs. There can be no better a way to damage a Nation than to socially fragment it.
Unfortunately the individuals and groups who were economically weak also did not try to attempt to come out of the chains of poverty. Many of them did not venture into the jobs that required challenge and dangers to physical existence. No doubt examples there of those who are placed at the highest esteems by the Hindu. They depended upon the educationally and materially stronger individuals and groups of society. They felt it easier to render services to others and be secure about the two meals. To add to this those who wanted others to serve them and accept their might also encouraged such approach of some members of weaker sections of society. And hence the distinct segments of those who rendered menial services emerged. Such service providers felt comfortable in the company of others of the same trade. Hence the individuals turned into to groups .So, emerged the segments of the society identifiable on the basis of profession they carried. This would happen in any society. But in India ruled by foreigners this part of the social system was given more air to fragment India. They also had the sword and power to influence the common man.
India had been historically, culturally and materially rich since the millenniums. Those who came from outside found it very difficult to simply herd the Indian people. They looked for divisive tools like richness and poverty of Individuals. The miseries of the poor were projected as being only due to those who were engaged in professions like trade, education and martial services. Sects and caste names were given more ink. British too used this tool to fragment the Indian society in general and Hindu in particular.
It is so natural that as soon as some one attains material and social strength he starts feeling superior to others. Even a Brahmin sitting in Math or Shrine like Mata Vaishno Devi may feel himself superior to a Brahmin sitting in a small stone temple in a village. May be at occasions an economically and socially well connected Brahmin may not even entertain a economically weak Brahmin in his drawing room. Similarly a Thakur/ Khashatriyae who is in a superior government service may not sit on floor with the a Khashatriyae born in a rajput family but working as a labour in the same village. Similarly socially backward groups that were identified as SC /ST with the work / profession they performed too have many who do not treat the poor members from their own caste or tribe fairly. We could find many from SC/ST/BC who after becoming rich through business or joining superior services after attaining higher education do not privately identify themselves with the caste or sect they belong. Many could be found identifying with the caste or group that they have named in their service records only when they want TO EARN SOME BENEFIT. I only want to point out that those who are further dividing the Indian society in the name of religion, caste and creed are not true to the God. British did it to rule India. But now You can yourself rule India .Then Why to divide the society and make yourself "weak" simply to rule your own Indian people. Come out to help the real weak from socially and educationally backward castes and tribes. In case you do not divide your people, you will be more safe to rule India.(* writer is a social activist and leading coloumnist of J&K affairs dayasagr@yahoo.co.uk )
