Train Depot and Museum
As you pull into the quaint town of Portola, it´s hard to miss the bright yellow train depot with the burnt red trim and doors. Nearby you will see the big metal building that houses one of the largest museums in North America dedicated to one railroad. At the museum you will be able to experience how it feels to drive a locomotive in the unique "Run-A-Locomotive" program. Here you get to operate hands on the locomotive on the museum grounds. You will also be able to climb aboard many other trains such as the California Zephyr, one of California´s most famous passenger trains. In the museum you will be able to learn all about the history of this unique railroad.

The museum is open 10am to 5pm and features a gift shop where you will be able to purchase cold drinks, snacks and railroad memorabilia. Admission is free but donations are appreciated. The museum is located about 5 minutes from the lodge in downtown Portola. You will also find other shops and dining options in downtown Portola.
