CHEA Holds "Town Meeting" on Accreditation and the CHEA Initiative

On June 26, the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) held its 2009 Summer Workshop, focusing on the future of higher education accreditation. The Summer Workshop, held in Washington, D.C., served as a "town meeting" to address the CHEA Initiative and other accreditation-related issues.
Participants at the one-day event included institutional presidents, deans and chief academic officers from colleges and universities around the country, leaders of accrediting organizations and representatives from education organizations and the U.S. government.
"The meeting´s format was designed to provide a platform for a vigorous discussion of accreditation´s future and the CHEA Initiative," said CHEA President Judith Eaton. "The strong level of participation and the enthusiasm shown by those attending the Summer Workshop demonstrates the higher education community´s commitment to working together to address the challenges and opportunities ahead for academic self-assessment and peer review through accreditation."
The CHEA Initiative, launched in 2008, seeks to further strengthen public confidence in higher education accreditation and to recalibrate the relationship between accreditation and government to assure that the accreditation and academic communities sustain their leadership in determining and judging academic quality.
Eaton stated "The focus of the CHEA Initiative and meetings is to build consensus and provide a foundation for accreditation´s future. It is the goal of the CHEA Initiative to assure that accreditation remains a strong and vibrant system of peer and professional review. We deeply appreciate the active involvement of all who have taken part in this in-depth discussion of accreditation."
