Michael Jackson A Lesson Not Learned

Alan E. Moses
As the world mourns the man behind the mask we can learn from or ignore the reasons behind his death. How many more must suffer from the abuse and acceptance of the surge of prescription medicines being used to destroy lives. It is not only the rich and famous that suffer but average Americans as well. This has become the addiction of choice as the illegal drugs have fallen by the wayside.

The so called legal drugs and alcohol have climbed to the top as the war on drugs goes into its 30th year. There is no doubt that those harmful drugs that we all are aware of continue to pose a problem that we still must deal with. Yet the rise of prescription medicines has appeared to catch us off guard again and again. Heath Ledger, Anna Nicole Smith and now Michael Jackson should be a warning that we start to deal with this growing yet accepted addiction.

Remember the outrageous thoughts of the addicted Rush Limbaugh saying how we should deal with drug dealers and users? This was a man stoned by all accounts on a very dangerous yet accepted pain reliever Oxycontin. In his mind it was okay as a doctor gave it to him and we all are fooled into this belief.

I understand that we still lack the final results on Mr. Jacksons autopsy. But there is too much information from mostly credible witnesses that he suffered from an addiction to pain killers and possibly alcohol. Both legal under the rules we play by. This is the problem as we are always to believe that what the pharmaceutical industry pushes is safe and controlled. Why would a person who spent years and hundreds of thousands of dollars to become a doctor give it all up to become nothing more than a drug dealer? Why is the same for a cosmetic surgeon that mutilated a mans face and had no ability to say no? Is it money or some inner ignorance that drives these people?

Is our society as with all great societies of the past so much in denial that we are not above what nature or God has created? Everything has an end on this earth and this should be the beginning of the end of this type of death. We all sat by and watched as a musical genius destroyed his own body and life. A man with talent unseen before but was not understood for who he was, Was not allowed to be who he was in his heart. Did we help him do this? did we condone his behavior?

We all must mourn not only Michael Jackson but that we all are guilty of not thinking , not caring, not able to deal with what is wrong with our society as a whole. The street drug abuser deserves prison while the prescription drug abuser deserves help. Is this right or even fair? Is this what we have become?

Michael thank you for your music the dance steps and for entertaining us for years. I wish one day we could thank you for a lesson that we refuse to learn. That is how this can happen in a so called advanced society. We are faulty and must learn that we all as people are self destructive for some unknown reasons. You have shown us that it does not matter what talent we have nothing lasts forever. And money and its evils can destroy even the best of intentions.
