Tiahrt Blasts Democrat Assault on Kansas Families and Workers

Congressional Desk
WASHINGTON—U.S. Congressman Todd Tiahrt (R-KS) today blasted Democrats for passing legislation that will increase monthly electricity bills for every Kansas family and will force thousands of Kansas workers to lose their jobs. Tiahrt said President Obama and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) were acting on behalf of radical environmentalists and have turned their backs on American families who cannot afford $3,000 energy tax hikes. The Democrat majority late Friday passed its cap and tax legislation by a vote of 219-212 over fierce objects by Tiahrt and House Republicans.

"Actions today by Washington Democrats will sacrifice 16,000 Kansas jobs in a few short years," said Tiahrt. "Every family will see higher monthly electric bills and will be forced to pay thousands of dollars in energy taxes each year. This means hard-working Kansans will see more of their paychecks devoured by the federal government. Grocery costs will skyrocket and we can all expect to pay extreme prices at the gas station every time we refuel our cars and trucks.

"This is one of the most significant intrusions into the daily lives of American citizens that Congress has taken. The cap and tax legislation is a direct assault against American workers and families struggling to pay bills and buy groceries.

"Democrats in control of Congress are making decisions based on partisan political science rather than climate science. According to NASA, we know that solar variations have made a significant impact on the earth´s climate. But President Obama and Speaker Pelosi are more interested in appeasing their liberal political base than caring about how many jobs are ruined or how many businesses close shop. The Democrat´s cap and tax legislation will cap jobs, raise everyone´s taxes and yield no real environmental gains."

The cap and tax plan is estimated to cost Kansans $1.8 billion in lost personal income as well as 16,000 non-farm jobs in just three years according to estimates. President Obama has admitted that his government program will only work if energy prices "skyrocket."

"By the time all the Obama mandates are fully implemented, farm income is estimated to drop by 90 percent," said Tiahrt. "The family farm will forever be altered. We have entered an era where Democrat leaders and the administration have forsaken rural communities across this nation so they can win the praise of radical environmentalists."

There are 46 national agriculture groups that have expressed opposition to the Obama plan, including the American Farm Bureau Federation, American Meat Institute, and the National Corn Growers Association.
