Doubting Thomases - look at the birds!

Rod Smith
"Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?"

Jesus spoke those words in Matthew 6:26. What a message regarding faith resides in that. If we really believe what Jesus says, then anxiety and worry will not stay long at the believerīs house.

Have you noticed how many people actually feed birds? In our neighbourhood many do - and probably most are non-believers. They are motivated by God but don't know it. For a long time the old lady next door (before she died) gave pieces of meat daily to kookaburras (Australian birds). Then of course there are the scraps they salvage from rubbish bins. God knows they need better nutrition than that, so He made worms and insects.

Itīs all backing up the above scripture that says God provides for them. Letīs look at the last sentence of that verse: "Are you not of more value than they?" God surely wants humans to trust and believe Him.

Oh, Christians sing heartily in the church about trusting God, but in everyday life we fail to apply it. We have to understand what faith is.

Imagine if you visit your bank manager and ask for a housing loan. He writes to state your loan application is approved. Then after reading it, you ring the manager and say "Please, please will you lend the money?" Heīd say "Didnīt you read my letter? Donīt you believe me?" Wouldnīt that be foolish of you? God has "written us a letter" in the Bible saying He will provide (Philippians 4:19).

Wouldnīt God's response (if we could but see it) be the same as the bank manager?

Humans are more valuable to God than birds. Jesus said so. Why then do we use worldly methods instead of faith when attempting - for example - to raise money for church projects?

On a personal level, why do we worry about food and clothing and the proverbial roof? Yes it is biblical to work, to have an occupation. Yet if we have no job and are genuinely working for God with a heart for Him, then He will see to it we donīt lack. We have an available unseen helper: non-believers donīt. All we need do is get on our knees and thank God in advance for the necessary money or whatever. That isnīt presumption, itīs faith. God has said He will provide. Letīs start believing Him!
