The Public-Private Healthcare Plan

Michelle Malsbury, BSBM, MM
There is much adieu about the proposed healthcare plan that is snaking its way through congress. The right wants it to fail so the health insurers can continue to profit unfettered by any competition that might help to lower costs and provide a level or better quality of care. The left champions the people, like me, who have no coverage and can ill-afford the rising costs. There is room for both a private and public avenue.

The public plan would streamline care and create a more competitive environment that would effectively lower costs so more of us can afford healthcare. There are plans out there offering costs in the area of $300 per month, but if you are unemployed, a lowly student, in the lower earning portion of our economy, or on a fixed income that is still unaffordable.

Take insurers like AIG----would you trust them with your premium money? I would not. A large majority of insurers, like AIG, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Aetna, are in it for only profit and care little to nothing about how the plan works for the people. That needs to stop! Prices need to come down, access and quality needs to go up. Americans need to band together to help all of us succeed!

Conversely, Medicare works well for nearly all. If we had a healthcare plan that worked like Medicare I believe that more people would be covered and have better quality care. In the 1960´s there was the same problem as Medicare was introduced-----people were skeptical, but fifty years later we can say it was a huge success. The same can be true of the Obama led healthcare plan.

For those who keep hearing from the right that they cannot keep the healthcare plans they have if they so desire I say quit lying! President Obama has said time and again that if someone likes the coverage they have and want to continue with that coverage they can do so. But for those of us with none----we will have options. We can pick our own doctors, even see specialists without referrals, we can select how much or what type of coverage we want/need. Those are decisions I can live with, can´t you?

Please call or write your local and state representatives telling them that we want and deserve healthcare. Healthcare should be a right afforded all Americans and not a privilege for those who can afford it. The time to act is NOW!
