Attention. Even Countries Need Our Attention: North Korea, Is An Example Right Now!!

Alice Aspen March
Since the middle of May, North Korea has been in our headlines and on our television screens. The Los Angeles Times ran a story titled, "Shock as North Korea Reports Nuclear Test." The article goes on to say that analysts have declared that Pyongyang was irate over criticism by the U.S., Japan and South Korea of its April launch and has grown impatient at the lack of attention it has received from the Obama administration-both possible motives for N. Korea´s actions.

Other media sources have talked about the "inattention" that N. Korea has been feeling.

Now in June, N. Korea appears to be getting more attention indeed. Obama says that this nuclear-armed N Korea is a "grave threat." Other nations are becoming appropriately alarmed. Daily there is alarm and fear escalating around the world. Residents of Hawaii are frightened that N. Korea's nuclear missiles could be aimed at them.

It appears as if N. Korea has upped its "acting-out" behavior in its pursuit to be taken seriously as an important nation in today´s world. Could this country feel desperate enough to threaten the rest of us, because it feels worldly invisible and can´t get the recognition and support it needs to become viable enough to assume the leadership it wants? Is their behavior asking for help to enter the 21st century, commercially, economically and politically? Reports from inside describe a poverty-stricken nation which is failing to meet the needs of its citizens on a humanitarian and economic level.

Obama has been quoted as saying the "Prestige, security and prosperity are not going to come through the path of threatening neighbors and engaging in violations of international law." Pyongyang´s pattern of creating crises and then being rewarded with incentives to back down, is going to be broken."

To me Obama sounds as if he´s describing a bully.

It´s gratifying to me that people bullies are now finally getting more attention in many places – in schools, in work environments and in relationships. Bullies have been wrecking havoc in relationships for decades, and it´s time that their behavior gets recognized and appropriately handled.

So why do we have people bullies and country bullies? Is this a simple or a complex question? There´s sufficient research to know now that when kids don´t get the kind of attention they need in their early years, they often grow into bullies; they get their attention by threatening others either emotionally or physically. Historically, most bullies have been boys and men, who become parents, lovers, employers, and partners. This anti-social or dysfunctional behavior is big trouble, can cause life-time impact and can also be called abuse.

Moreover, today we have a growing body of research which clearly shows more and more girls and women are exhibiting bullying behavior. During elementary school more girls are speaking out about the kind of abuse they´re getting from their fellow female classmates.

Reams of research clearly show that everyone needs attention so much that often any attention, even negative, is better than none. It´s time to teach this in schools which physicians and dentists attend, lawyers and judges attend, where teachers, and fitness specialists matriculate.

It´s time to have available and compulsory pre-parenting programs where "attention curriculum" is taught. We need to know that the kind of attention we get in our childhoods lives with us forever! In fact, all of us who impact on a child or another person need to know how important attention is in a relationship. We need to know that the same attention does not work for everyone. We need to know how to determine the specific kinds of attention each person needs to effectively communicate, create healthy relationships and to love one another.

Perhaps it's a dream concept to think we can teach this concept, which really could work to make this world a healthier and more peaceful place.

The world needs to create a place for peace in their communication and relationship with N. Korea! Can we create a dialogue to determine exactly what their needs are, to listen to them so they know they´re being heard? Can we see that they´re at survival and desperate to be recognized? I wish I knew the answer to that!
